What do you guys do for theft prevention?

Other than just turning off the gas, what's the best theft prevention you guys use. I've got a '60's muscle car that I just hide a switch that grounds out the ignition system. With the advanced electronics on these things (2008) rancher ES, I'm afraid of just jumping into the old school mind set.

Uh Theft? I guess if I was to go into the city I'd take the key out of it. The key lives in practically everything out where I live, the trucks, tractors, gators. All the farmers have got a gun and dogs so there's not much worry of theft.

Hahaha I love this ONE, guess they bring em back too after they don't shift too LOL

My best advice is good insurance, as about anything you do, a thief that wants it bad enough will get it.
So, that means harder you make it less of a target it tends to be.
IF you leave a key in it and it gets stolen, MOST insurance company's won't cover it? So heads up on this.. they call that owner abuse or??

Not if you can keep it in a locked garage, shed.
if your crazy, you can remove a wheel or all and hide them?

or run a chain and a lock thru wheels, lots of crazy thing you can do.
ME, I just keep key inside hATV sits outside. Under a tarp right now, and is fully insured for all items I have on its , if it got stolen, I'm covered , still would suck. Crooks suck.should all be shot when caught IMO, or at least cut a finger off for first timers! Something to think about for them??

Well, off topic, but mines shifting just fine now, thank you. All my vehicles are well insured and kept in in closed garages or shops. But, being rural and likely to travel on occasion for extended periods, I think it prudent to make the theft of anything I own as time consuming as possible and maybe cause the piece of crap trying to rip me off to think twice. On second thought though, I'll just put in a security system that monitors the whole property that I can check via smart phone.....

bingo !!..that is what I did when they broke into my home, and stole my dads very very old guns !. I hate thieves !. sooo..I went to bestbuy, forked out 700 bucks on a very nice security system , it is a dvr, has worked flawless !. camera's have a 80 ft range in pitch dark ?..and they work great !..lol. then I had to switch to a smart phone, so I could watch my house from any where in the nation !. as for stopping them ?..other than making it harder for them ?..there is no 100% sure fire way to stop them ?..if they want it bad enough ?..trust me..they can, and will take it !. all we can do is slow them down ?, make it harder for them ?. oh..and I also put a hidden switch in my truck to keep it from taking a ride without me ?!..lmfao. I was in no way going to fork out 1k or so ?..for a system that kills power to the starter ?, and ignition ?..when a 6 dollar hidden rocker switch can do the same thing !!..lol. and yes..i have camera's all around the outside of my house..watching every square inch of not only the outside ?..but have them inside the house in every room !. it's made by swann security , and there is no contracts to pay either !. their tech support is top of the line, 24/7 !.

Yes shade tree, that's exactly what I'm thinking. Does your system alert you upon movement in a secured area? Calling 911 would not produce much results for at least a half hour. But, a call to my well armed neighbors would produce results in a matter of minutes.......
yes sir !..you can set it up to email you of any movement ?..and it also takes a snap shot from your smart phone if you want to take a pic from your phone !. I love it. say your watching your house from out of town ?..and you open up the app , see someone on your property doing something they should not ?..you can push the record or take a pic right from your phone. once you set the alerts up to holler at you ?..the alert also has a pic of what triggered the alert ?..very nice system, best dang 700 bucks I have ever spent !..lol.

I will definitely look into this! Having separate buildings may be a problem though, unless they are advanced wireless tech.......
they have wireless camera's as well. but I don't trust them !..lol. as long as you put 1 or 2 camera's facing that building ?..and most are aimed at the doors and windows ?..I think you will be ok ?. again though..you could get a wireless camera or two ?..and set them up with the system ?..but I think wired is the best !..lol. you will need to talk to swann security ?, or the ppl at bestbuy ?, they can answer any questions you may have about the wireless camera's ?. just google swann security , have a look at their products ?..i'm pretty sure they will have a system you will like !. my system came with 8 camera's, with a spot for a 9th camera to be added ?, and that is what I did. you can't step anywhere near my property without me seeing you !..lol.

well I guess if you go around and get yourself a reputation for NOT being a guy to screw with, that can go a long way too
I won't say what my rep is here, BUt last time the cops came her they weree OH so polite in asking IF they could come on my property, as they were scared to LOL
as lets say I'm a local well know gun nut case, with more shooting skills maybe than brains!
working with so many police depts over the yrs, and training I once did and well having an explosive's lic doesn't hurt!
or known to have grenade launchers and flame throwers, and well a tank at one time!
who was never scared to go a litle wild at times OPP|s maybe I saying too much here!

BUT, no has ever stolen anything at my place!!
at the farm, iv'e had some trail cam's taken, BUT I have also had a couple returned, and don't really know anyone that has had that happen
and pretty sure the reasosn was someone found out they were mine LOL
SO< lets say having a reputaion of sorts can detere many from thieft too!
as once was said,
walk soflty and carry a big stick!!
but add don't be scared to use it!!
as more its been known to get used, less folks want to test it LOL

Sounds like we have a similar security system, and what your saying is so true. I have a sign out front that reads CD's Cycle and ATV Shop letting every thief in town know that there is more than likely Bikes and Quads in my shop or barn. There have been things stolen from properties less than a mile away, and I'v still been lucky. For me the reputation started in high school and has carried on to this day. Like mrbb I have had a thing or two re-appear after I thought it was stolen, after it re-appeared it made me wonder if I was loosing my mind. LOL. So what seems to work well for me is: Good communication with neighbors, Firearm(s), Well secured building(blinds over windows, master lock on roll up garage door, ect), a reputation in your community that you are more than likely going to shoot first and ask questions later, and a reputation in your community that if something does come up missing that it's more than likely your going to find out who did it, and deal with it yourself without involving the authorities.

Some folks remove a wheel or two .......

Hardened chain looped over the frame and back to a hardened eye in the concrete floor.
Hide your disc grinder ...

Note: It's sometimes harder to cut stainless 'soft' core cable. It squashes and distorts, and it may take a few tries to get through it ....
Hidden 'night switch' ........

Lots of folks do lots of things ....
A determined thief will get your quad if he wants it .....

I use a Winchester 270 or 300 Ultra Mag if I don't hear them quick enough, and they get 1/2 mile away, and a 45 if I do hear them quick enough. If I'm not home a surveillance system recording all the time.

I fully agree some times if word gets around about , lets say your life style it can prevent things from growing legs. BUT sadly, many times coorks are from out of area and or just dumb kids that don't know you, or any better, drunk or on drugs at the time and NOT thinking at all.
and as others said, IF someone wants something bad enough, they will get past most things you can try, or do, to stop them, and why GOOD insurance is still at the top of my list.

My gun store was robbed 3 times, and had 24/ 7 cameras, metal doors , bars on wwindows, security systems, motion detectors, and so on, they cut a hole thru thr roof once, and a wall second time and so on.
never got much, and all 3 were later arrested.

and worse maybe, all 3 were people I knew and thought of as friends, and LONG time customers.
heck last two, had guns on layaway, and didn't even take there own guns when they rob me.. just took a bunch of junk guns ,as all the good ones we kept in a BIG safe. LOL
when folks want to steal, if they want it bad enough, its really hard to stop em.
harder you make it, less folks want the work to get it.

and my rep started in High school too, well was the first time I had dealings with the FBI, who hauled me out of the lunch room in front of every one, and rumors flew from there, and then when the state police showed up a few times , and so on.
and all the while, I never got a charge on me. and still to today have a clean record.
BUT folks sure have wild idea's on what I did or didn't do in my area LOL
rumors and imaginations run wild.
I get a lot of breatihng room due to it too LOL

It usually sounds like Afghanistan at my house 2-3 Sundays a month because my brother likes to come from the beach and go shooting.. I have a hundred yard range right in the back yard.. Usually 4-5 of his/our friends come out with him.. I typically always have a sidearm on me and anyone that knows me in the area knows I love guns, and I'm a pretty good shot to say the least... lmfaooo... Most people don't rob places where shots are already being fired.... lol

Plus my neighbors will stop in if anything is suspicious lookin and have guns drawn.. Funny story, I moved my side X side out next to the shop and 2 of the nieghbors pulled in the yard the next day expecting to catch someone trying to steel it, come to find out what they thought was a person sitting on it was the head rest...

No one really messes with anyone in my neighborhood... Everyone has guns and quite a few retired farmers and most of them are all related in one way or another so any weird looking people around and they'll find out the hard way...

sounds like my place, and area
I live in a town that has just one road a dead end too LOL
and in the whole town there are less than 40 n homess LOL

we all live RURAL< shoot guns in our yards, at the end of the dead end is an actualy shooting range, 100-200-300 yard , a pistol range, a shotgun range and a trap skeet house and range, and then there is a reactive target set up for more advanced shooting, and a sub gun range for small machine guns LOL
its a Private range, most home owwners in the town belonge to the club, and ALL the police depts use it to qualify, masybe 40+ depts from several county's, I do range work there off and on and have trained a lot of shooting over the yrs there and else where and then when it was an actual job for me for many yrs!
so, we have a pretty steady flow of cops on my road, all neighbors are armed and hearing gun shots is a 24 hr deal here, NO one complains about shooting here, no matter at what hr, as we train at night and such, and well, folks in the country are known to , lets say enjoy a fire and that many times leads to a few shots going off at????
I was a little deeper into shooting than most folks here too, for many many yrs, I used to shoot about 20-1,000 rounds a day EVERY day, we held shoots every weekend in which we shot tens of thousands of rounds, brass was oicked up and 50+100 lbs of brass was rather common!, as having so many class II items, ammo went fast,
the belt fed 50's and 308's and 303's 8mm's
sure added weight to brass fast! LOL

add in all the small things we blew up in teh name of fun on a weekly basis
and I guess I fit the so called gun nut picture pretty well
then add in all the professional training I went thru and then the training, the competition shooting, from the up close stuff to the 1,000+ yard work I loved and still do.
I would guess my skills are a little higher than a lot of gun owners LOL
I've traveled to a LOT of places armed over the yrs and its rare for me not to have a gun on me, just second nature after so many yrs of doing the things I did
then again I have also been shot too before LOL

SO< that I guess makes me appreciate things or view things a little differently too! LOL
been stabbed too LOL, also carry a kinfe most places too LOL
OH well, we all have our hobbies! HAHA!

This is what my brother text me last weekend.. Said "Coming over for breakfast, bringing a few toys." LMFAOO... We are both ex military..

A lot of my neighbors are game wardens and sheriffs as well, all good friends..

We like to play paintball too, not the speed ball type, the woods ball and urban fields. It keeps us up on urban techniques and stalking through the woods.. We take it kind serious to say the least.. Gets real fun when they let us go full auto, I can ramp up to 15 shots a second... We've got a small team of about 5 to 10 of us.. It's real good for learning how to control adrenalynn and shooting.. Plus nothing like shooting people all day and them not really dying..

Edit:

Some of my paintball buddies..

At a tournament in NC and my buddy decided to shoot the cop car with his nerf ball bazooka..
