Reverse light installation

I'm new here and I have a 2012 Rancher FE with 2 hours so far.

I want to install an LED reverse light that comes on when I shift into reverse. I do not want to switch the light on and off manually. I cannot find the switch in the wiring diagram that lights the reverse indicator light on the instrument module. If I can find that, then I can tap it for power for my reverse light.

Can someone tell me where the reverse light switch is located?

Thanks, I've been enjoying Honda ATV Forums so far and learned much.

Welcome to the forums. The gear position switch turns the reverse light on. It operates through the PCM. The gray wire going into the gear position switch grounds the circuit when in reverse. The gear position switch is bolted to the inside of the rear crankcase cover, but you should be able to find the wires coming out of the cover.

we've had this talk before...lol..sooooooo to refresh your old age..lmfao..the neutral wire switch has constant power to it..it grounds out when you change outta gear..same thing goes for the reverse..( i don't remember which way the power is ? )..sooo..it's not as easy as you think to wire up !.lol.

i don't know what the color of the wire is ?..honda changes stuff now and then !..lol. i tried doing this with my '89 trx350D foreman 4x4..but the problem i ran into was..when you wire the LED's up..you use one wire for power..and the other for ground..well..the problem i ran into..the reverse light would come on when i went into gear !..i'm sure i coulda figured it out..tried a relay and all ..maybe i had the wrong relay ?..i ended up just putting the LED back up lights on a rocker switch..sooooo much easier..and faster to do..than tear into my wire harness. what i liked about the rocker switch..is i got the ligthed kind..so when i fliped it on..it lit up..too tell me it was on..then when i turned it off..it would go out. and welcome to the forums.

I can tell you how it grounds. The shift drum just turns around and part of it touches the tip of the reverse switch and this grounds the wire to the shift drum and to the engine and since the engine is connected to the battery ground, it completes the circuit.

Think about it this way: The same wire grounds the reverse light and makes it light up. What's the difference in hooking up another light (backup light) the same way and using the same wire to ground it and make it light up.

By the way, we had a member ask how to wire up a neutral light because his display was broke due to hitting a tree. I will post a link to the thread, at the bottom of this post. He didn't come back and reply in the thread about it working, but he sent me a private message this is what it said "worked like a charm ! even mounted in the bezel around the screen looks factory". Hooking up a backup light wouldn't be any different than this, except you would use a bigger light and you would hook the ground wire to the reverse switch instead of the neutral switch. It's just a simple circuit.

I've done it as Helmet instructed and it is simple. I used it to turn on an LED backup light. Works perfectly.
Connect the positive + side of the LED you are installing to a positive + wire that is always on (not switched) when the ignition is on. Then, connect the negative - side of the LED you are installing to the GREY wire as Helmut instructed.
Simple as that! Good luck.
