I was forced to leave my atv out in the elements due to circumstances. im trying to clear the scree up with baking soda and lava soap an a little water so i can see it. it is working some, but is a long process, and in the end may not be enough. if i have to replace it(i can go with out it, but rather not), doe's that mean the whole display?

grit of sand paper

i didnt know it got to that number of grit. plastic is a lot different than working with metal or wood. that might also work on those plastic head-light covers on autos an trucks.

Have you considered the headlight cleaning kit? It uses a power drill and uses a couple different grits to bring the plastic covering back to clear. I haven't used it on a display but have on the headlights and am very impressed. The cost on the 3M kit was bout $22 at an auto parts store. I would also check with Wally World.
Just a thought?! Let us know what you decide.

bad plastic

i will consider anything that works. remember any grits that it use's? im all for power tools v/s elbow grease. the kits i seen a few years ago at auto stores, were more like wax on/wax off. i didnt put much stock in them.

I don't recall what the grits are but they get progressively finer. The finish on it is pretty smooth. I would also look at a protectant which would help keep it that way. The kit "grinds" it down but I don't recall if there was a step to protect.

sun beked screen

it got mostly faded by the sun. i thought the people who left their fish-finder screens out in the sun and they got baked were idiots. likes like im the idiot on this one.
i though since atv's are out in the sun a lot there would be some kind of polarized lens to protect screens.
where is the icon for dufus?

If what you are talking about looks like my before picture of my Rancher's speedo then it's called "crazing". Watch this video for the general idea how to do it:

Mine wasn't bad as you can see. I just wanted to fix it up a little. Still took a good 15 minutes to a half hour. But the results are great.

Yours just looks a little bit scruffy. mine is more like a dark amber to dark brown. "cheap sun glasses"

i got some 600 from lowes, (5) 3.66x9inches for $4.21,, then at auto zone (5) 3.66x9inches for $5.50. AZ had 3m paste for around $12.00. i didn't get it. i figured over $11.00 worth would just sit on a shelf longer than i would ever sit on anything. The guy there though said he used clear-coat for plastic(clear-kote?) on his projects and it worked better than other ways, as long as surface was clean. i went to lowes first or i would have got 800 at AZ as well.

can i run with out the display hooked up? electronics might be intertwined. im in between rainstorms this week, and can bring the headlight assembly inside to work on it some. 1st i would have to see if i can read the display with out the cover on it. what little ive done so far has made it a little easier to read, but, it could be burnt too. might have to replace the whole thing in the end.

It's not that hard to take the cover off. I don't know whether it would run without the display or not. I know they will run without a working display, but completely removing it might cause issues.

The cover is held on by about 1/2 dozen screws. Take the meter off the handlebars (3 10MM nuts) and take the cover off, then see what your screen looks like. It it's not just the cover that's messed up, just bolt it back together and run it till you can get a whole new meter. If it's just the screen you can take it off and inside to work on it.

What the hay!

couldnt read display very well. display brownish, sun burnt. might as well break out the sandpaper. soo i used the wet or dry 2000 on the display. got it to where i can see the mileage i couldn't see before. even the mile speed was a little better to read. almost whole numbers. they were wholer than before i sanded anyway. put the screen cover back on an lost a little on visual.
i didnt try to polish or get the display any better because i figured i would probably make things worst. if i could only get that component of the circuit board then maybe..(hell freezes over before that happens)
sometimes shot is shot, an your wallet bleeds out.
