Hard starting then runs fine

I have a 2007 420 Rancher with fuel injection. Over the past month I'd noticed that it seemed to be a little sluggish starting in the morning. Now over the past week it has become very difficult to start. I have to hit the starter 10 to 20 times to get it to catch. Once it finally starts, it sort of chugs along at low rpm and then after about five seconds, runs normally. This only happens in the morning. When I go to feed in the late afternoon, it starts normally.

The engine was rebuilt last year and has run fine till now. I have premium gas, a good charge on a one year old batter. The starter works fine. I'm thinking there something electrical going on with a sensor or the ecu. Any thoughts on what's going wrong?

Thanks,

Sounds like a fuel filter and or pump. Many here recommend replacing them at the same time. If you decide to take this approach then drain the tank completely and make sure it is dry. Purge the fuel hoses before before attaching them. You can clean the idle control valve at the same time. It's right there so it would only take a few more minutes to give you peace of mind.

When you say "hit starter 10 or 20 times) do you mean to get the starter to turn the bike over, or do you mean it's turning over but won't fire off?

Instead of a choke the EFI bikes have an idle air control valve. When you turn the key on you should hear it buzz and it cycles up and down. #11 in this schematic

https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/honda/atv/2014/trx420te1-ac-trx420te1/throttle-body

It's held in place with 2 tamper resistant screws. Grab the heads with vice grips and remove the valve, and clean it well with some starter fluid/ contact cleaner/ aerosol cleaner of some sort. Then turn the key to the on position and see if it spins back and forth when the bike initializes.

Sometimes they get gooped up and won't work right, so it's like having an automatic choke that doesn't work.

Checked your fuel filter?

odds are its NOT , NON ETHANOL FUEL< as if it was it would need to be listed at the pump where you get it

if this atv sits a LOT, IMO< best thing you can do , is DRAIN old fuel out, or as much as you can

start with NEW fuel
and a NEW spark plug
as just replacing parts without ruling out the most basic things first can be wasting money!
NON ethanol fuel can go bad in a few weeks sitting!

and have to ask WHY was this motor rebuilt?
IMO< while you are changing spark plug, I'd do a compression test
as if motor was rebuilt and wasn't cleaned out well, dirt and crap can eat away things fast? and cause starting issue's

start with fuel and plug though would be what I would do, before THINKING larger things wrong!

The fuel pump/filter were replaced in May last year. But most significantly, when I went out to start it this morning with a temperature of 30F, it pretty much started right up. The problem seems to have started with the colder temperatures we had up till today (7-20F).

To give a better description of the hard starting, when I hit the starter, it spins over but doesn't catch, or the starter disengages and I have to start again.

The air valve sounds like something to look into. Thanks for the suggestion.

The machine was rebuilt after 3000 hours of use. Everything was replaced over the course of last year (starter, pump, shifter, battery). Up till now it ran just fine. Twice a day, every day I use it to feed my livestock. A tank of gas only lasts two weeks, so I wouldn't think that's an issue.

Sometimes I think I should have worked harder to convince my wife to get a new one.

Define spins over but doesn't catch. Do you mean the engine turns over or do you mean the starter turns but not engaging the engine. Does catch mean starting a little or the starter actually engaging the engine. If the engine turns over well and catching means "tries to start" then Jeep may be on to something. If it runs well other than at cold startup then the idle control valve is suspect.

Hi: Do you use a battery tender when the bike isn't in use, if not use one. Also never touch the throttle when trying to start the bike.

Fuel filter, injector, spark plug, ethanol fuel??? Can you hear the pump working?
