welcome to the forums. my money says your rear differential needs to be rebuilt.

And that can be done with the $130 set on ebay? comes with the tool for the pinion. How hard is it to get it shimmed correctly?
those rings gears and pinion gear sets on ebay are not bad, I have used them ( my bud did ), they are not oem ?, but work. I think he paid about that price for the set that came with the free tool ?. you will need all the bearings and oil seals as well to do a complete rebuild. just watch where the old shims are when you tear it down, don't mix them up !!. put them back in the same spot you removed the from.

Yeah I don't plan to buy any parts until I have it apart. I rode it through the yard today to put on the front porch and it rode good. But when I went to pull it onto the porch( which is up two steps) it caught and wouldn't move any more.

Here is the rebuild kit I was looking at NEW Honda TRX300 300 Fourtrax Rear Differential Ring Pinion Gear Plus Kit 88-00 | eBay

Thanks for all of the quick responses!
yep, that's the set my bud bought, comes with everything to rebuild the rear differential. it does not have any parts to rebuild the rear brakes backing plate though !. soooo, you will need to order this as well, use boss bearings, as jeep said..STAY AWAY FROM '' ALL BALLS ''..pure junk !.

Ok, so just search rear brake backing plate rebuild? I've never heard of anyone having to do that.
I looked on boss bearings web site from here, did not see a rebuild kit for your atv ?, but I did look it up on partzilla.com, here..have a look a this micro fich break down, you need the bearing that is on the inside ( towards the differential ), and the seals, two of them I think it was ?. Make sure you buy the ring gear that's pressed together not welded like one you linked to. The shims have no flat surface to ride against they are essentially junk. I did use their bearing kit and tool though and it's been good so far. I think I bought the new brake panel bearing from Honda.

This the the ring and pinion you want

ya know ?, I never bothered to notice the ring gear was welded like you say ?. but it was not mine ?..sooo..lol. I just put them together, explains why they were so cheap huh ?.lol. the bearings were good, and the tool worked great. i'll try to remember this in the future :).

Thanks guys, it's in awesome shape. What is a good price to put on it once fixed? I figured $1500. Also how hard are the swing arm bearings to do on these?
i'd ask for around 1800 give or take. swing arm bearings are easy to replace, getting them out of the swing arm is tough at times ?, but can be done !.

Removing the bearings was the tricky part when I replaced them on my swing arm. Just welded a bolt to the old bearing and I was able to pull them out.

I suck at welding so that's where the tricky part came in haha.
never have welded on them ?. but, I take the easy way out !. I drive them out from the other side, reaching through the swing arm. works a lot easier this way for me. this only works if your swing arm is open from one side to the other ?, if it's not ?..then you have to drill a hole just inside the drive shaft side, to use a long bar that reaches to the other inside of the bearing, then you hammer them out. been there..done that.

Is there a bearing puller I could rent from an auto parts store maybe? Or just get a long bar to knock them out? I ordered the used u joint and driveshaft that was posted and got it yesterday, looks better than new lol. Waiting on swing arm bearings now
I doubt you will find a bearing puller that small at any auto parts store ?. just go to lowes, homedepot, and hardware store, look for some 1/2 or 5/8 solid bar, even look around at construction sites, they always leave scrap rebar laying around. and this bearing puller is called a blind bearing puller, very high dollar from places like snap on. not once have I ever used one, nor will I for what they want for one of these tools!..lol.

Yeah I know plenty of people with snap on credit haha. Ok I know the bearings come with the plates that go on the back side of the bearing so I'll just have to drill through that to get rebar through to other side. You guys using anything special for gear oil? Or just use 80 weight gear oil like the rear end has stamped on it?
you don't even need to drill those metal plates behind the bearing, its just tin !..lol. you can knock a screw driver through them just by looking at them..lol. that's your least problem. getting the bar to hit each side of the bearing from the other side is gonna be tricky. as for the tin piece ?, just hammer it inwards from that side, it will come right out...or in ?, either way..don't worry about it. yes, 80w-90 gear oil for the rear and front differentials is what goes in most atvs ( 2wd rear, 4wd front and rear ). I use the same gear oil in old trx300's transfer cases ( the case right in front of the motor ).
