Went to look at a 2004 Honda 450 and when he fired it up it smoked like crazy.I mean BAD!!! The bottom had been done about 2 years prior. The head wasn't done.My question is, could the seals be bad enough that when the bike sits for a week could enough oil run down on top of the piston to make it smoke that bad for about twenty minutes or so or might there be something else.I didn't do a compression test but we had to use the pull start to get it going and it seamed to have a lot of compression. Not sure if it was because of all of the oil sitting on top of the piston or not.The bike only has 3340 km on it and seems to be in good condition other than that.Any thoughts?

20 minutes of smoke seems excessive for stem seals , unless maybe they are totally gone , but then it seems it would never stop smoking -------- I got a 450 that was just rebuilt , it had a new upper a couple of years ago , the connecting rod which is pressed onto the crankshaft was worn , it allows the piston to wobble in the bore and eat away the piston and the wall of the bore into a out of round situation , so 2 years is actually a long time for a upper job to last with a bad rod , from talking around , it seems if you do a upper job with a bad rod you will get 20-40 hours and it needs to be done again ----take it a part and see whats going on inside

3340 km isn't much , but it only takes 4 ft either horizontally or vertically to do it in

Thanks for the replys. Pretty much what I have been hearing all along. My final thought is to forget it and move on.I am looking at a 1997 Honda foreman 400.Thing looks to be in real good condition. This is a picture of it.Trying to get it for 2500.Has around 13000 km on it
