You can use an aluminium Hawse or a roller fairlead with a wire rope or a synthetic rope, fact, tried and tested.
Just don't use a synthetic rope on a USED roller or hawse, you'll have a scrap rope within seconds.

I use a fairlead mainly because my winch gets used every time I go out, like the guys above have said it is easier on the winch rope. I'd use either though, a thick Hawse is essential though to dissipate the heat generated by friction.

Yep, I remember the times when it was only roller fairleads available, used to cost a fortune too if I remember rightly. I must admit, synthetic ropes are a fantastic bit of kit, intend to wrap mine around my carrier once it's spooled out. I wouldn't be scratching my carrier with a wire rope I tell you that lol.
