not sure what the difference between the vantage and pro vantage is ?. I have bought 2 warn pro vantage 2500s, with a K.F.I. mounting plate, and a roller fair lead. if your going to go with the rope ? ( which I love ! ), make sure to get a roller fair lead, NOT THE HAWSE FAIR LEAD !. the warn pro vantage 2500s is more than enough to handle what you need. instead of buying anything larger ?, buy a warn accessory kit, you get a d-shackle, tree straps, and a snatch block. a snatch block will double the pulling power of that 2500 lb winch, comes in very handy.

I find when you get into steeper angles with the hawse fairleads it will start chewing up the synthetic cable. I've winched my Renegade onto my truck a few times and you notice it then.

anytime you use a hawse fair lead on rope ?, it causes friction, friction is heat, heat makes the rope break. use a roller fair lead, problem solved.

I use a fairlead mainly because my winch gets used every time I go out, like the guys above have said it is easier on the winch rope. I'd use either though, a thick Hawse is essential though to dissipate the heat generated by friction.
back in the day when winches had nothing but cable ?, all you seen was roller fair leads. fast forward to today, we have rope. when I gave it a lot of thought, I decided to go with the roller fair lead to make it easier on the rope. my rope still works and looks like it did the day I installed it

also, if your looking for a GREAT deal on a winch kit, have a look at the one at tractor supply company stores, its everything the Warn has(I have a warn one)
and its at a fraction of the cost
ALL war things come with added prices due to there Name, NOT saying there bad in any way, just your buying a name at times more than some things!
and i'll bet you a dime to a dollar, a warn will out last that tractor supply winch in the long run !..lol.

Is ice a factor when the rope is continually frozen/thawed ....... expanded/contracted ....... heated by friction in a hawse fairlead ?
This may not be a factor for you southern folks ...... up here, it is a factor.
Rope may be the greatest thing since 'sliced bread' ........ but, it isn't used in the forest industry at all - where winches are used everywhere ....
I'll stick with the 'tried & true' wire in a quality roller fairlead ...
yeah, I am sure weather, such as ice, would effect rope on winches. some things calls for cable, and some call for rope. if your pulling heavy/bulky loads, such as trees ?, then yeah, cable on a roller fair lead would be best. but, if your only using your winch to pull the atv out ?, then rope will work great, but as you said, weather on it would not help it any better.
