I don't want the cheapest winch, but I can't see spending top $$ just because. Anyone have a recommendation? I looked at WARN, but see the 2000lb model will run about $300 plus the cost of a winch plate…another $85.
There mush be a better deal out there. Any VIPER owners?

I bought a 3500 lbs Gorilla winch for about $110 have had it for about 6 months and have had no problems to date. I use it all the time, to pull me out of big mud holes, up big hills, and to get everyone else unstuck.

I put a Moose 1700 lb winch on my 09 Rancher, can't remember what the price was but it has plenty of power for the Honda and is a breeze to install. I also have the pulley(snatch block) to use if I need a lot of torque. I believe it is made by Warn for Moose. It's also one of only two winch's that will work with my Moose "Rapid Mount System" snow plow.

I will be installing this 3000lb winch from Harbor Freight on my '01 Rancher. I will give you some feedback when I can find out what it does. It lists for $139 and was on sale for $99 - so I picked up two with a warranty.

I decided not to opt for the cheaper 3000lb. camo version. This one is very stout and twice the size. The motor on this winch is 1.8 hp which is pretty powerful compared to the warn in the same class, as well as the other specs being very similar. Only time will tell. I found it pretty hard to stomach spending over a thousand dollars for two winches.

I got the following from on eBay for 139 including shipping:

2500LB PROMARK ATV Winch 2500 LB Synthetic Rope Pkg CQ

Then the mount from Promark as well for $45:

ATV Winch Mounting Plate Honda Rancher 420 UU

It looks very solid - well made. But I have not installed yet.

You will not be disappointed. I ended up returning the HF winch since I did not like the way it mounted. I also opted for the Promark and it is certainly a nicely built unit. Only time will tell whether or not this is as good as a warn.

420 - winch dimension problems

I just bought my first ATV a couple weeks ago, a 2010 Rancher TRX 420FPE. So far it's great but I want to put a winch on it. I was ready to go with the Promark but I've pretty much decided to go with the Moto Alliance VIPER. They have a great deal on ebay for $225 for the 2500 lb. with a great accessory package including the mounting plate for the 420 (EBAY Winch).

However I'm worried about the section that states:

VIPER Max Kits - Honda Rancher

* MA11917A:
o All 2004-2007 Rancher 350 & 400 Models
* MA11917B:
o All 2000-2003 Rancher 350 & 400 Models
* MA11919:
o All 2007-2010 Rancher 420 4x4 Models (does not fit 2x4)
o Please Note: Winches larger than the MX2000 may rub on the tires when turning if the tires are larger than stock.

I might like to change tires at some point to something a little more aggressive but don't want to cause a problem with the winch.

I also talked to a service guy at the local shop and he said they have had problems with the size of some of the "off brand" winches on the same ATVs not fitting as well and had to go with the Warn. Anyone had any experience with this? The 2000 lb. is about $20 cheaper but I'd rather have the 2500.

Anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences with the space problem on the 420?

Thanks,
Rick

So nobody has had any problems with the mount area not having enough interior dimension or the tires rubbing on the winch (with a 2500 lb. or higher winch and/or oversize tires)?

ProMark (formerly Gorilla) with the mounting plate from the same. Thru EBAY it's a LOT cheaper, but you don't get the lifetime warranty. I paid $140 for my XT3000 (...or maybe the 3000XT?) winch and the mounting plate, comes with a 6 month warranty. It's a 3000lb. winch, extreme rated. Same one thru ProMark themselves was about $100 more and you get the lifetime warranty. I called ProMark. She said they are the exact same winch...just that you are paying for a warranty. I figured that since I could buy a whole nother winch for about $100 later on if needed...I'd take the gamble. I think the winch was $99 and the mounting plate was $40 or something like that.
So far so good. Fits perfectly. Very clean. Only problem was that WARN said their front mount plow system requires a WARN winch mounting plate...so I just ordered the WARN BELLY mount plow system instead of the FRONT mount system. Everything is installed and working and would recommend this combination of products to anyone so far.
