I am looking to get the new Smittybilt XRC 3 ATV winch but the mounting pattern needs to 4.89 X 3.00. Warn is 4.90 X 3.00. The Winch comes with a universal mounting plate but should I try and use it or get one made for my 03 Rancher?

They're usually easier to mount if you get one for your type of 4-wheeler.

You could make your own if you have a drillpress and a sawzall.

So should I get the one for my ATV and then hone the holes to work for the winch I want? There is not much difference in the dimensions
That warn mount is real close. If it don't work the way it is, you should be able to slot the holes a little and make it work.

ok thanks for the help. I didn't like the look of the universal mount. I looks like it mounts to the front of the ATV. I would like it tucked behind the front better. I am glad Smittybilt started making winches for ATV's. I have one on my Jeep it is a great company for jeeps, so should be good for ATV's also. The complete kit for the ATV is only about 160.00

I also just purchased a new winch for my '04 Rancher and they sent me a mount that will not work for my bike. It looks like this:

The manufacturer can't explain why if won't work but I'm thinking that this mount meant for the Foreman will work.

Can anyone shed some light on this or maybe suggest a mount? I might end up just making my own.

Honestly, I think that winch mount will work. It looks very similar to my warn mount, except it has less hardware and does not look as stable when pulling a heavy load. The warn has a bracket that attaches to the back and braces the main mount against the frame, as well as more hardware attaching it to the frame. Check it out in this pic.

Hard to see any detail in the picture. My mount won't work because it's to long and wide. If I line up the front holes the top part of the mount sits on top of the electrical connectors. Also where the bolt line up the mount has about a 1/2" gap on each side. Try posting the pic again, I won't mind seeing the instructions.

Thanks

Gotcha...it looks very similar n design to my warn. Here is the link to the installation instructions in pdf format. The message board would not allow me to upload due to size.

Warn Rancher 350 Winch Mount Instructions

What brand is that winch mount? What brand winch you using?
I have a Warn winch mount and a Warn front bumper. I am using a Promark XTR Series 3000 lb. with synthetic cable - very nice unit.

Thanks for the instructions on the Warn. The warn mount is different than mine and I might consider purchasing this one. The mount I have came from the winch manufacturer and after I told them it won't work on my ATV they refunded the cost of the mount back. I purchase a 2.5 Runva winch. Good price and came with synthetic rope and is all steel construction.

Here are some pics of the poorly fitting mount and the ATV it's going on. You can see the mount hitting the wire connectors when the two lower bolts are lined up.

When the mount is pushed down to miss the connectors at the top the lower bolts don't line up.

I think I'll purchase the Warn mount. I like the way it mounts and how the fairlead is separate from the mount. Runva sent my a roller fairlead and when I asked them if this would be a problem using synthetic rope they said no, only a problem with the smaller rope. I didn't really trust the answer so to protect the expensive rope I'll purchase the right fairlead. How was the pricing on the Warn mount and fairlead?

I purchased the warn mount separately for around $78 from Motosport. Now, the roller fairlead, which is aluminum and specific for synthetic cable, came with my winch package.

If I did not have the warn front bumper to attach the fairlead to, then I would have had to mount it on the front frame with the included extra plates that came with the winch mount. If you refer back to the previous mounting instructions for the warn mount (page 4 shows photo), it shows how the extra pieces attach when installing the fairlead. I did not use these extra parts since I already had the warn bumper which has built in provisions for the fairlead.

I have another '04 Rancher and will be mounting the same winch, but with no front warn bumper. So, it will mount the way the warn instructions show it and the way you will end up mounting it.

Here is the kit I have: 3000 lb XTR Series Synthetic Rope ATV Winch. Save 50% Off Retail and Free Shipping. Complete Synthetic Rope Package for ATV / UTV Winches.

I would suggest looking at this Promark if you want to pay half of what the warn costs. I will be getting one of these for my '04 since I can get it as part of a package: http://www.promarkoffroad.com/winch-mounting-plates/atv-utv-sxs-mounts/honda-atv-winch-mounting-plates/promark-atv-utv-winch-mount-honda-rancher-350-400.html

I did manage to find a warn mount for a very good price on eBay for $35 which includes shipping. I like the way the fairlead mounts seperate from the mount. I will be buying a synthetic rope fairlead. Thanks for your help.
