Got stuck today and I need a winch, but Dennis Kirk doesn't have one that says its an exact fit so what do you guys use, and where do you mount everything?

*Side note* This is my first time on this forum so I apologize if this question is in the wrong thread.

I use nothing but warn winches, and KFI mounting plates. you can go to KFI web site, see what all winch brands fit your make/model, and they also show what winches fit your atv.

I have an 04 Rancher 400 as well. Do what shade says. My kfi mount fit great. Winch mounts on the plate then. And on the 400, kfi's mount puts the winch up and back and out of the way.

ok, like above,m you need a winch mounting plate to mount the winch to
most fit in the front end of your atv between the fenders like above the axles and mount to your frame
you want a winch of at least 2,000 lbs, 2500 is better, 3000-3500 if your a real mud nut type, as being stuck in deep mud has a vacuum like effect that takes more grunt to get free some times, but for basic STUCKS a 2500 will be fine
you can always BUY a snatch block and that will DOUBLE The pulling power
having a winch helps, but you need to learn HOW to winch safely or it can be dangerous.

as for winch brands, NOTHING wrong with a warn but there price tags
I prefer Super Winch brand, as they seem to work just as well and cost a LOT less $$

as for line type, steel works fine, but has more CON's to it that synthetic rope rope does, but syn rope still costs more to replace when needed?
comes down to what type of winching you do, and what your wallet can support! IMO

I prefer wire rope, for what all I do with my winch lines!
they both work and have pro's and con's
