I put a set of ITP 312 14" wheels on my Rancher about a month ago. I been riding several times without any problems, all day rides at a few different parks. Well yesterday my daughter is riding her 3 year old cousin around in the yard and the back tire falls off. Lucky no one was hurt. This could have been very bad if going fast. We started looking and found three of the four lug nuts. I checked all the other Wheel lugs and they were all at torque specs except for one on the other rear tire. I don't think I missed torquing this wheel when installing but if I did I can't believe it took this long to come off! I will reinstall all lug nuts with lock tight. Has anyone ever had this happen? How often do you check your lug nuts? This really is bothering me.
Really glad the wheel coming off didn't get anyone hurt. But things do happen? I had new tires put on my Blazer, but once I got it back I kept hearing a noise I'd never heard before? Because this noise kept bothering me I decided to check the lugs just for the heck of it? I found all of the lugs on the driver side were loose (12 lug-nuts in all were loose) the left front wheel was one third of the way off is what the noise was. I was really glad it bothered me enough to check it.
The easiest way is to get in the habit of checking the lugs to make sure they are in spec each time you put it up at the end of riding each time. Once you do get in the habit of doing this, I think you'll find it's not that much of a pain.
And if your in a hurry and can't do it that evening? Lay the wrench on the seat. This way you'll remember to do it before going out again.
Ask me how I know?
