I'm looking at getting a used Rancher 420. Looking at the 4x4, manual foot shift, solid rear axle, and w/o power steering. This setup is acceptable to me and would be the simplest mechanically and most likely the lowest priced on the used market which is important to me. With that said, are there certain year models to avoid or give preference to? What kinds of things should I look out for on a used machine? I have some land with a couple buddies and they keep their 4-wheelers out there. I have been riding theirs, but I'd like to have one of my own. Thanks for the advice!

There is an excellent sticky here, on this forum, about what to look for when buying a used ATV:

The most important thing to know about a used ATV is how badly was it abused. Has it been sunk?? Sellers are most likely never going to tell you the truth. This is why inspecting it is so important. Does it have a snorkel? That's a sure sign it's been in the mud and water. Personally, I would never buy one that's been snorkeled.

Sadly, many people sell them because they know the ATV has issues. Doing your homework, like reading the sticky, can keep you from buying someone else's problem.

I'm sorry I can't speak to issues with specific Ranchers but hopefully others will chime in.

I like the smaller frame size of the 2008 - 13 Ranchers. They are more nimble on the trail. Ditch the stock wheels and go 12”wheels X 25” tires.

I think if you use the same basic skills to look over a used car they apply to an ATV; that is, size up the individual, place of residence, look over the unit for abuse/abnormal wear/tear, etc., and story regarding the unit. I'm confident these items will give you a good idea of the history,,,,
