Where should I go from here?

Hey guys,

I bought a 98 300ex off a guy that ran pretty good but it was knocking from the top end like a tink-tink knock didn't bog or anything when I was test driving it. It needed new clutch plates and he had some that came with the quad that were brand new EBC Dirt Racer brand... also had the clutch cover gasket.

Took it out riding that weekend all was great ran fine just the knocking was still going and the clutch needed some new plates but wasn't bad.

So a couple days later I drained the oil changed and took the cover off and found quite a bit of metal shavings down under the oil screen so I checked all the bearings and they were all in good shape and went ahead and changed out the clutch plates and put it all back together and as I was putting the nuetral switch on it sheared off and I had to get it out and get a new one so I finally got it all back together. and it started up and ran good and the clutch was now fixed.

Anyways I took it out riding that weekend and was doing some trails and I pulled in the clutch to check my battery to see if it had fallen out because it's only held in by zip ties and the engine just died on me. So I tried to start it back up again and it wouldn't start... the starter motor was turning but the engine was not.

So I got home and checked all the fuel lines and such and it was all clean no obstructions checked the spark plug and it looked ok nice blue spark... put my fingers over the plug hole and checked the compression and it blew by fingers back so now I'm stuck... Any ideas?

Oh and give those new exhaust valves a good break-in period. Just dont romp on it for a little while.
So I took the cylinder head back off and checked everything out the cam sprocket bolts were fine but the cam chain was really loose... I checked the tensioner and it was all the way out and there still was slack.

So I think the cam chain is stretched. I'm gonna order a new one is there anything else I need to get as well and any special tools that I need to replace the old cam chain?
Yeah, sounds like you need a timing chain. You may need to replace the chain guides if they look worn.
I already replaced them thanks. Anything else that I'm gonna need? Can i take the cam chain off without taking the clutch basket off?
I believe you have to remove the clutch and oil pump. If I remember right, the primary gear won't slide off until you remove the clutch basket, it catches on the back edge of the clutch basket.
... that sucks. How do I remove the lock nut that is staked?

I just take a small punch or old screwdriver and bend the staked part up and then I use an air impact wrench to bust the big nut loose.
Should I get a new lock nut or will the old one be fine?

You're not supposed to reuse the locknuts, but I usually reuse them once unless they crack. Sometimes, when you bend up the staked part, they will crack around the outside edge.
Anybody have any idea for the jetting? It did have a 128 main in there before but I put the 122 back in it cuz my old spark plug was black.

My mod setup is a DG slip on pipe and k&N air filter.
So I got my stuff in today and replaced the cam chain. It was definitely stretched its so much better now!

I haven't had a chance to start it because the threads on my crankcase for the oil plug are completely gone... add one more thing to the list :icon_cussing: lol So i'm gonna re-thread it any suggestions? Really the only thing i'm worried about is the metal shavings from re-threading it getting into the motor.

But after that I should be done with my rebuild! Hopefully the new cam chain fixes the knock as well!

Put some grease on your tap and it will catch and hold most of the metal shavings. Take your time and be very careful as aluminum can be very hard to tap threads in because it is so soft.
well its all done new cam chain in and new oil plug. The old cam chain was definitely stretched no more knock :icon_ banana: and the engine sounds strong and beautiful!!!

The only thing I have left to do is to adjust/ jet the carb. Any ideas on what I should tackle first on the carb I really don't have a clue.

I have a DG slip on pipe and K&N lifetime Air filter on there. So far I just have the stock 122 main, 38, 2 1/4 turns out and i'm not sure about the position of the needle.

Anyone have any suggestions where to start?
The problem I'm having is when I let off the throttle I get some backfire. Some people have told me that I should change the pilot jet to a bigger one. Is this true? I'm thinking either that or a leak in my exhaust system. Sound right?
Since you have a DG pipe and a K&N filter and still have the stock main jet, I would say that you need to step up on your main jet. I don't know what size you would need, though. Moose or Billy could probably help you with that.
Ok so I put a 125 Main in there, a 42 pilot and left the needle the same. It Idles good and doesn't backfire now. It does however fall flat when I gun it to WOT any suggestions?

I was thinking maybe I should try and take the air filter lid off and see if it helps it or not if it doesn't then I'll know that it's lean and vice versa right?

Yeah, that will work. You may need to raise your needle up a notch, unless you determine that you're already too rich. If Moose would chime in on this, he's better at this than I am. I haven't done any jetting in years.
