I found a 2004 400ex on craigslist for 1000$. It says it is in good condition but it wont shift out of first gear. Does that mean i would need to buy a new clutch kit and get the engine rebuilt?or is there any other way to fix it. Or should i even invest in buying this quad.

Welcome to the forums....
i would say that issue could range from an improper clutch cable adjustment to bad syncronizers in the tranny? There's no way of knowing without looking at it. I would go look at it and ask a bunch of questions. sit on it try to shift it through the gears ect. rock it shift rock it shift ect ect.

well the quad is about an hour away so i cant really test it out. and no i would not be able to do the work myself since im 15 and do not know much about repairing. How much would it cost to fix something like this?

A lot of money for a repair shop.Your best to just move on to another quad that needs less work.

you're looking at $65-$75 per hour and probably 6 hours of labor. That's not including parts.
