I have a 92 Fourtrax with a separate ICM and Alarm unit, but I have been unable to determine exactly the purpose of the Alarm unit.

I recently have been experiencing spark issues and have narrowed it down to either the ICM or the Alarm unit, since when I move them (particularly the ICM) in a different physical position, I get spark. I think there may be a broken solder joint somewhere inside the unit, and moving it makes the connection connect or break.

to tell you the truth..i really don't know what that alarm unit does !!..lol..other than it's tied to the oil temp sensor. my thoughts..if your oil temp sensor detects an over heat..my guess would be it would or suppose to shut down the c.d.i ( this is what you call the i.c.m ) ( we call it the c.d.i )..and then the c.d.i shuts the motor down by not letting spark get to the spark plug coil...as to if and when this happends..no clue..never had an over heat do to oil getting to hot...as for your c.d.i working in certain spots..i'd say your c.d.i is near death ( i.c.m )..replace it.

The alarm unit just operates the oil temp light and optional fan, if equipped. When the Fourtrax 300 overheats (it rarely ever does), it don't shut the CDI down. The oil temp light comes on, but it will keep running. The alarm unit is also responsible for making the oil temp light come on for a couple seconds and then go back off, when the key is turned on.

As Shadetree stated, I would say the CDI is the problem, too.
