Hi, on my 1985 Fourtrax 250 there is a plug on the left side of the headlight beside the handlebars with a rubber cap on it. It looks like factory installed. What is the plug used for? Any ideas? Thanks

ps Anyone know where i can find a manual in pdf format?

Ok, I'll check that as the headlight does have a carrying handle on top so I assume that it is somehow removable. Really need that manual, I'll try to PM Helmut once i figure out how to do that! Thanks

Sorry, I don't have a service manual for the Fourtrax 250, but the 250 did have an accessory plug. It wasn't the normal round accessory plug or outlet, it had two flat terminals like a plug that fits in a wall outlet in your house, but one was turned sideways. The rubber plug that is on it, pulls off and you wire that side to your accessory and that plug stays on your accessory all the time and you just plug it into the accessory outlet on the ATV. You have to have one of those plugs for each accessory that you want to use, otherwise you would have to take it off and wire it to each accessory each time you use it. To wire the plug up to an accessory you have to pull back the outer rubber cover and it will expose the two screws that your wires hook to. You have to feed the wires through the rubber plug first. They are marked with a "+" and "-".

To remove the headlight, just swing the two brackets out (one on each side) and pop the headlight off.

Thanks again for all your help! I think I will wire this plug to a standard 12v outlet & use that instead, since most accessories these days use that type. I will check it with my volt meter tomorrow to make sure I have 12v and go from there.

In case you don't have an owner's manual, you can download one for free at the link below. Pages 16, 17, and 18 of the owner's manual explains the accessory plug and how to remove the headlight.

Hey Helmut, just wondering, where would I purchase the plug connector that fits into the plug on the fourtrax? Do you know what it is called? Thanks
is yours all there ?..the plug is already there..yeah..took me awhile to figure this out myself...lol..if yours is all there..pull the rubber front part off...the plug is inside the rubber part that you pull off..now..the owners manual says to remove the plug from the rubber part..talk about a b___h to get out !..lol..after you remove the plug..you then run the wires from what ever your hooking up through the place where it says - & +..then you simply turn the plug around and plug it into the outlet thats there..now..if your's is missing..you should be able to get one from the dealer..or off any older model atv that has one on it..they changed to the newer round style on the newer models.

You would have to get that from a dealer. The Fourtrax 250 and the Fourtrax 300, both had those types of plugs. I guess it would just be called an accessory plug.

How hard would it be to convert to the new round style? Just take it off & use the existing power wires maybe?
Yes, use the existing wires. The hardest part will be mounting it, unless you don't mind cutting a hole in the plastics to mount it. It would be easy to mount that way.

i have a set of Tusk Handlebar Grip Heater and thumb warmer they dont have a wire that hocks up to the ignition so they stay on even with the key set to off, do think i can splice into the 12v dc power supply and hock up the grips to it or is there to much power going though the 12v dc power supply.

That'll be fine as the power port doesn't control how much juice the accessory uses,it just supplies up to the fuses rated amperage, and the heaters will only draw what they need...
