Its bolt #23 in the diagram. It has a copper washer and screws right into the crankcase cover. Directly behind it inside the cover is the oil pump. I got a new washer with my gasket kit and was wondering what the hell its used for. It doesnt really screw into anything (except for the crankcase cover)

It is a bolt used for checking the operation of the oil pump. The copper washer is to make sure it seals all the way up because it is under the pressure of the oil in the system. But the way it is used is you start the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes if its above 60 degrees out or 15 minutes if its below 60 degrees out and then you remove that bolt while the engine is running. If any oil comes out your oil pump is in-efficient. If nothing comes out the oil pump is scavanging the proper amount of oil from the engine into the oil cooler, topend, and oil tank and everything is good.

Well, the things they dont tell you in the service manual. i kind of figured what the sealing washer was for. But, had no idea about the bolt. i just finished putting together this engine cause of replacing the left cranckase so basically every single part including transmission had to come out. I just finished up and went through the gears and everything seems to be good before i throw the top end on.

Someone on here had the same issue. I have personally installed the clutch cover one over 100 400ex engines and never had one lick of trouble. Could do it blind folded on atleast half of them. Not really sure what is going wrong. The other guy used a really strong magnet?

It's funny how things work. I just got it to catch. Thats whyi deleted that part of the post. At least I think it is on there :) can't lift the arm out or remove the cover so should be good. What would the magnet be for, to pull the lifter forward? I know it pushes in and that affects getting the cover on. Each time I go to put it on I'll pull the lifter out

I think he said it pulled out on the lifter while he turned it and it caught. Or something along those lines. Glad you got it though!
