This sounds like a dumb question, but what oil is the best to put in a "85 Honda 250 Four Trax engine? other words which brand should I use and what weight, plus should I use a four stroke oil or can I use something like Castrol or other brand? or does it need to be Honda Four stroke oil?

You don't need honda oil, but you do need oil made for atv/motorcycle wet clutches. Just look on the can and be sure it's says wet clutches and it's OK.

I think Castrol has a wet clutch oil, and there are others. Check autozone, etc and you should be able to find it.

I normally use Honda GN4, 10W-40, but I have used regular Castrol with no problems. Most automotive oils have friction modifiers that will make the clutch start slipping. I learned this the hard way by using Pennzoil. If you can't get any kind of ATV oil, I would use Castrol.

Well it looks like I'll just have to break down and get the atv oil! ounce of prevention goes a long way. I'm new to the atv stuff,so thanks for the info.
Looks like I'll be changing oil in my sons 125 four trax also.

Your question is a valid one, not dumb, however there can be many dumb answers. A safe and very good oil to use is Honda GN-4 10W-40. Remember to always change oil filter and use Honda OEM filter. Aftermarket filters have too many variations and sometimes cost the same. Insist on OEM filter. Many automotive oil brands jumped on the bandwagon when more and more people became aware that an engine with shared oil for engine, clutch and tranny would perform better with an oil different from what a car engine would need. They now sell oil called ATV oil or similar, many times it is only an automotive oil in a different bottle. They are not up to the heat and discolor the engine inside, the oil thin out from the tranny, the top end wears faster and clutch performance suffer.

Stay away from all newer oil for automotive use that is energy conserving or with friction modifiers.

Another top oil to use is Golden Spectro 4 10W40. They also make a cheaper Spectro 4 10W40, however the Golden Spectro is far superior to most oils out there. With your '85 there is no need to go full synthetic.

Go the extra mile and get yourself the recommended oil. Buy extra and keep bottles at home. Ask dealer for discount as you buy from him instead from an automotive store.

Is Honda oil made different than regular high detergent grade 10w-40 automotive oil? The closest Honda dealer is about 30 miles away, but if I need to use Honda oil,I guess I'll just have to order some to be shipped to me.
I am in the same boat and I just order my Pro Honda oil and filters from Amazon. I figure the owners manual is worth following on these machines that get some tough use. My ATV uses the same oil for the transmission and engine, and I figure it is critical. The transmission sure does not like the oil when it get the slightest bit dirty.
