On my 2009 OEM Honda Recon 250 carburetor, I'd like to adjust the air/fuel screw but it appears to be covered by an inset piece of concaved brass that I believe is called a Welch plug. How to I remove that?

If that brass plug you're seeing is on the side, the pilot screw is not under it. The pilot screw is on the bottom of the carburetor. From the service manual:

It’s missing
If there’s a piece of brass in that hole then the needle has been broken off super bummer.

If you can’t remove with a tap you will need another carb

I also wanted to adjust my Recon’s carburetor and I had the same brass plug not letting me. I think it’s for emissions, they don’t want you to adjust it. I ended up taking my Dremel and cutting off some of the steel round piece that hangs down and covers the plug. Then I cut a slot on the plug put my screwdriver in there and unscrew it. It worked great. Just be careful when cutting.

I’m glad we all resolved this issue. Did you have to cut the round piece to get the plug out or did you do something else?

I’ve learned lot on this forum, just glad I’m working on my and friends machines and trying things out that now I’m able to help others once in a while.

Brass Welch Plug Removed

2017 Honda Recon with Keihin Carb

There is a brass welch plug that covers the pilot screw. I just got mine off today. I found a small screw to fit the hole, screwed it in a turn or two, then used pliers to pull it out with the brass welch plug attached. It was easier than expected. Hope this helps someone.

Picture #1: Plug blocking pilot screw
Pictures #2 & 3: Plug removed
Picture #4: Plug removed; pilot screw exposed (single d)

Happy 4th!
