I have a 2003 350 rancher with a WARN 424. The cable was inserted through a hole in the front fender. I need to take the fender off and want to disconnect one end of the cable. Any suggestions (warnings) would be helpful.

where the cable goes into the back side of the aluminum control knob tube , you unscrew the end piece of the aluminum tube , then slide it out just enough to get the ball on the end of the cable out the groove that it fits into , if you go too far then the detent ball will fall out the shaft and have to be set back in place ----only problem is , if it has been a long time since it was apart and you never put some never-sieze or grease on the threads , then it might never unscrew , I have it happen a couple of times , if this is the case , then just cut the cable , order a rebuild kit for $120 and it comes with everything , bearings , seals , cable , knob , mounting bracket , you can't buy the cable by itself ----google either Wide Open or Warn 4x2 kick out instruction manual and it will give you some pics

the knob ends are the same , it is the opposite end of the knob where the cable holder screws into the barrel , some are hex'ed and some are round and knurled ----- that ball ate me up a couple of times , till I got a method ---I can't explain it , but you hold it a certain way and don't worry about trying to keep the ball in place and it finds home
