Clockwise leans the mixture. Sounds like you need to come counterclockwise a bit.

the easy way to think of it, when you turn right to tighten, you are closing the hole up restricting more fuel. As you turn left to loosen, you are increasing the gap allowing more fuel in. Get it started and warm it up for about ten minuets before you start to adjust anything.
