I have a 2007 Honda Rancher 420 efi manual shift. I had to replace ALL of the fuel system because it sat for years without being started. Before and after getting it to run properly I have a problem with the turn signals and only the turn signals.

Whenever I turn the turn signals on in either direction, it kills the engine? Other lights work properly. I doubt I absolutely need them to work, but if I were to sell it I would want them to.

While it was sitting I had a mouse/rat chew up a lot of the wiring in the back area where the fuses/relays are. I reconnected all the chewed up wiring and double then triple checked it and is seems to be correctly hooked up. Everything else works correctly.

Could it be a relay or fuse? The battery was hooked up when the rat got to it and was discharged when I fixed the wiring. I replaced the battery.

Any idea? I know little about how it's designed.

Thanks in advance, Dale

There is definitely a kill switch, but that's a different switch and it works properly. The turn signals used to work properly and the user manual shows them. Nothing on it that has been mucked with except for the rat. It's stock.

Thanks for the reply! I have a known good wiring harness, but that's going to be a real PITA to replace.

Orange switch is turn signal. It slides sideways and centered is off, Yellow and white control lights and high/low beams which work correctly. Gray/black button below turn signals is kill switch. It is a 2007 Rancher 420. I bought it new in 2008 from an authorized Honda dealer. It came from the factory like this.

Thanks to you and anyone that can help! Dale

Orange is kill, left or right. Center is run.
Yellow light on/off
White is high/low
Black on bottom is starter.

I have the same on my trx700xx and that same switch is on countless other honda models. I've never seen the kill used in a blinker set up from factory, not even europe.
They just make a new contract module if it has factory blinkers, something is amiss

Thank you,
Back when I rode it, the blinkers worked and did not kill the engine. That's what the kill switch is for. How the blinkers kill the engine, or why they should, is a mystery to me. This may have been a short or something caused by the rats. If I cannot determine the cause, I'll have to start replacing modules, or relays, or ? The spare wiring harness has all the same components.

Thanks to all, Dale

Akunin you are correct that the black switch is the starter. I was wrong. It's been a long time and I'm not getting any younger. I always just turned the key switch to kill it.

Thanks, Dale

No worries Dale. My trx700xx has the same setup, I usually use the key as well. Only if I store for awhile I use the kill switch
A great big THANKS to all who replied! I was WRONG! Even the owner's manual shows the orange one to be a kill switch (after I looked it up ). Now all I have to do is get the cowling back in order and take it for a spin.

Sorry to have caused any trouble and not believing in the people who actually know...

After replacing ALL the fuel system (from tank to injectors including a fuel pump, etc with $$ Honda parts} from all the fowled fuel that sat so long, I can now finish buttoning it up and ride it. BTW, I added a fuel tank drain cock and bought some non-corn gas and some seafoam, just to be safe.

Thanks, Dale
