As some of you will know I had a trx250a for MrsUK but it was a little to big for her. The problem she had was feeling in control, she wasn’t physically strong enough to manage the steering over bumpy terrain. (She’s a nurse, so not the strongest of women).
In my eyes it was an accident waiting to happen so we sold the 250a.

So I’m browsing through eBay as usual and come across a few trx90’s, now I know these are usually kids ATV’s but it got me thinking...

It will be light, so she should manage it
It will be low powered, a great first ATV
It will be small, she will feel safe riding it

Any thoughts guys?

Here’s a few questions,

Will she fit the ATV?
My wife is 5’ tall and the weight of a child that height, she’s a small unit!

Will it be powerful enough?

Are there any known issues to look out for with this model?

Take into consideration, MrsUK has NEVER ridden an ATV or motorbike until she met me to which she has only ridden around an asphalt yard a handful of times.
Hence me wanting to start with a small basic machine.

My buddy bought a Honda 90 last year for his grandson , I rode it and it is small for me but I am 5'9'' , as far as power goes , that thing is a blast to ride , too much for a 6 year old , but he handles it well

You can’t go wrong with them, nice power and well known in terms of reliability so she can ride it for a while and likely sell it for what you paid for it. Another nice alternative is the Honda Recon as well.

Good responses there, thanks all.

My plan with this is it would be a confidence booster for her, she’d be able to manoeuvre it herself if something went wrong.
I don’t want to push her into something that she’s not confident In riding an ruin the enjoyment of it all for her.

Do the 90’s have a reverse gear do you know?

My cousin had one..... Then he outgrew it and it sat in the weeds for years... So my brother and I took it and revived it... Bulletproof and tons of fun.

But no reverse.

If you see any yamaha breeze or grizzly 125, take a good look at it. Also any kymco of the same size group. Kymco made them for yamaha and are great machines.

Are there training programs to teach riding where you are? We have certified trainers and courses. I find my wife learns easier if someone other than me does the explaining. I road off-road bikes for years self taught. I took a class and learned as much as I could. The class made a big difference for me. Throttle control, body position in turns and while climbing, driving over logs and in sand. Made me a better rider.
The one thing I noticed teaching 5’ tall ladies how to use a throttle is that their hands are so small. They need to really pay attention to the thumb or wrist is doing and reposition if needed. Especially in tight turns. Also hugging the tank and leaning forward to give the arms full range of motion.

There’s nothing like that available over here due to the lack of ATV’s. I’m confident in myself to teach her, she just isn’t confiedent in herself on a bigger machine. It’s mainly because she’s not a strong lady.
I’ll start her on a smaller machine and upgrade again in the future I think. Seems to be the logical way forward.

I’d like her to have a 300 eventually but I need to figure out a power steering mod before I move her up to one of those, she’d have no chance of steering it in a mud hole with 28/30’s on haha

What about starting her off with a Chinese bike?

Say like a fuller sized 125?

Not sure about across the pond, but over here there are TONS of em.

You can buy em brand new for around $600-$700.

They all usually have reverse too.

By the sounds of it, the type of riding she would do, I think it would last her a while, and be a good learning tool.

Just a thought

I had considered it, however I’ve owned a China cheaply in the past.

At least I know with a Honda it will hold its value and start up in 2 months time without an issue.

We have thousands of the China cheapies here, so so many on eBay all for sale as spares or repairs. If one turned up super cheap I’d probably buy it for her but folks seem to think the Chinese junk is worth what they originally paid for it.
Crazy people!

I think she would enjoy it. I LOVE riding the TRX90 quads. My brother in law bought a new one and every time we go to visit in Utah I take the 90 out for a spin. Here's a video I posted two years ago when it was brand new:

So I’d given some serious thought to one of these little ATV’s, logged into eBay, checked notifications and the one at a reasonable price has sold! Damn!
