I’m looking for a trx450r and I came across an 07. The guy said the valves need to be adjusted so it won’t start using the electric start but it will roll start. If it’s been started with the valves that out of wack would you all think there could be any damage?

If the valves are so out of whack that it won't start, it should be the same whether you are using the e-start or bump starting it. I'm assuming it's an issue with the e-start itself.

That thing looks like it was raced gncc or most likely in the ixcr series. I would look up the number and name on it and see if you can see what class he ran in. If it was pro ridden then it was likely race team maintained. If not then it was more likely rode hard and put up wet. LoL

How would I look it up? And that thing is just sexy. It’s got everything I would ever want from a quad. Houser arms, hiper beadlocks, im not sure about the suspension brand I can’t tell in the picture. They look decent though. I messaged him and he said as soon as he had to roll start it he quit riding it to avoid damage. He said the engine is stock so if that’s true that’s another bonus. And plus if i buy it I might take it over to a Honda dealer near me and have them look it over and adjust the valves and other small things. They’re good people over there. Dan Powers Honda.

Shocks appear to be stock yfz450r shocks with a triple rate spring kit and rebuilt by someone. Almost looks like a texas flag on the sticker on the resi. Hard to tell. And as for how to look it up. Google his name and number. If hes raced any of those series they are posted online im sure. Did this with a kfx450 my brother bought. Turns out dude ran a few gncc races in ohio and indiana. Was a C class rider and he ended up buying it. We rebuilt it and did the mantainnce that was never done and he shattered his heal on it laat year and it got sold.

I feel like it might be a little wide to have raced XC. Could be wrong though. I looked up Indiana Boys Racing and it looks to be a team of younger dudes. I didn’t see any pictures of this quad on there. They have a list of the riders and the owner isn’t on there but he might have quit the team. Anything can happen I guess.

Yfz shocks? Haven’t seen too many of them on Honda’s. People say they’re fantastic though. And yea I’ll try to dig up some history on the bike.

Nevermind. It was someone else that raced it. Mwxc. You were right. I believe this is the same quad but has been through a couple color changes and a few different parts. Same number. Pretty much the same graphics I think. Just a different style

Yep same graphics except they cut and removed the front number plate and changed the color of everything. Even looking closer the shocks look like stock trx450r shocks and both have had a triple rate kit and im sure re-valved.

I’m talking to the owner that used to race it. He said that guy talking about the electric start and the valves sounds sketch but he loved that quad. He said it was his “practice bike” haha. He said all it’ll need is some freshening up. He bought Adam McGill’s practice bike. So that’s pretty cool.

So from what I understand. When he had the bike. It was in the best shape. He built it from the ground up. I’m gonna try to get it for 3k or less. I think I can do it because I don’t even know for sure if it runs, it’s been raced, it needs about 1k put in it for updating things and freshening up, and I have to fix whatever is wrong with it lol

So in your opinion what do you think could be the problem? He says it won’t start with the button because the valves aren’t adjusted but it will roll start. I’m assuming what he’s saying is it’s turning over but won’t fire. I think it sounds more like timing to me. Surely a 450r chain didn’t stretch and let the cam jump on it. The original owner said it sounds pretty sketch.

That sounds about right . When the intake valves get tight (need to be reshimmed) the engine doesnt turn over fast enough to start with the valves being too tight. It wont have enough compression to start. But when u push or pull start it it spins over alot faster and can start. Very common problem and is easy to fix. Well if u are mechanically enclined

So if I go look at it and we roll start it to make sure it runs is that ok? Like will it hurt to start it just for a second to make sure it runs?

Could be a bad starter clutch. That would be my only concern. I have heard of 450s not starting when valves get to tight. And since 450s head design is for most power and reliability out the door they sink valves in at a very fast rate. Requiring valve service alot and also requiring head machining alot more.
