Hi. Can anyone help I'm have an issue with my 2010 trx420fa. It goes in to r, n, 1,2 and 3 but will only go in to 4 &5 if I slow right down and keep pressing the up botton. As for auto. It won't change out of 1st. Any help really appreciated. I've already changed the gear change motor and gear angle sensor. Thanks .

Welcome to the forums :)

I can't help with ES/Automatic, I have no experience with these at all unfortunately. There are guys on here who are knowledgeable with these machines though, hang in there, help will be along soon.
All I can think of would be to check all of your plugs and connections.

It could be a plug or connector like SamUK advised, I'd pull those all apart to look at them before spending any time elsewhere. It could be the AT/PC shift solenoid too.... you can test that pretty easy. First thing to check before getting into troubleshooting is the oil level in the crankcase though... is it clean oil and full? Is it the proper oil (JASO MA or MA/2) for Honda wet clutches? Has the bike been submerged?

Check to see if there are any trouble codes stored for both the MIL and the shift indicator and let us know if there are any.

It gets complicated quick trying to troubleshoot it beyond there. You'll need to read and follow the factory service manual in Section 14 to diagnose it much further... Let us know how we can help...?

Thanks for the advise. I've only had it a month. The oil level is full and very clean. Maybe the last owner put the wrong oil in. There are no codes. It's funny because with ignition on it will go up to 3rd but when pressing it to 4th there is no noise. It doesn't even attempt to go in to gear. Thank you for the manual. I'll have a go and let you no. ?

If the bike isn't moving (or axles not rotating, as on a stand) it may act like that because the ECU monitors both of the vehicle speed sensors and the gear indicator along with several others... If the ECU thinks the bike isn't moving, or isn't moving fast enough, it may not allow another upshift to occur. The A/T mode is particularly fussy... it won't upshift at all if any one of the sensors on the motor & drivetrain, or shift solenoid circuits are acting up.
It gets complicated quick once the basics are checked out.... hopefully you'll find something simple like moisture in a plug on a VS sensor or solenoid or whatever...

I put 420FM secondary in my wife's 420AT and had to shave the speed sensor mounting flange down to get the speedometer to work. If the speedometer isn't reading, it won't shift. If the wheels aren't on the ground, it will do exactly what you're describing.

It was really weird, but when I had mine up on jackstands, it won't only go into 4th when the speedometer was on exactly 7mph. I could hit upshift accelerating and decelerating and it would go into 4th at 7mph every time.

Does your speedometer read anything? If so, does it go up and down normally, or does it jump all over the place?
