So I have been doing some reading and I havent found anything on the oil alert box. I may not be looking hard enough. Will it cause no spark. I’ve troubleshot everything I know to do and through the manual and everything checked out fine except for power from cdi to coil. Replaced cdi with new from Rocky Mountain. Put it in tonight....no dice. Think I’m going for the flywheel stator as I have read. Not sure what has all been done to this thing. Bought it as a non spark machine. Thanks in advance. Pat

If you think you have a bad CDI or alarm unit it may be possible to revive them by drying them out in an oven.

put CDI or alarm box or both in oven connector side up. Turn oven on no more the 200F; dry them for at least 3 hours. Let completely cool before reinstalling — (i let them completely cool in the oven)

Hey Pat
I read somewhere you got odd readings on your stator?
Can you catch me up on that?
pretty sure he bought another used stator, installed it, and just said no dice above ^^^.

OP, you really should take a step back, re-trace all of the wire harness, inspect for any mice chewing ?, dirty connections at all points, trace from battery to ignition, box under bars, every thing !. dont start tossing parts at it !. I say this because when I started in on my '88 trx300fw project, I found out the ignition switch was not the correct switch that was in it when I took it under my wing. honda changed the wire harness through the years, not all trx300's are the same 100% !. I had a chance to do a spark test on a '88 trx350D foreman a couple days ago, was told it did not run ?. no battery in it, checked spark plug, discovered the spark plug boot came right off the coil wire when I pulled boot off spark plug, fixed that, stuck spark plug in boot, laid it on rocker box, checked all my fuses, ignition switch connectors, all of it. kicked it over..i had spark !!. shot a very short burst of starting fluid to it, she fired over !!. in other words...DO NOT OVER LOOK THE SMALLEST THING ON YOUR '88 TRX300FW !!!!!!.

I’ll look further into the key switch. I checked the run switch and it checked good. The oil alert box has me worried as it is not an OEM. Does the oil alert light stay on until the motor starts? When I turn the key it’s on and stays on. I have s reverse light when shifted and my neutral light works as well.

Alarm box not OEM?
hard oil light means either the oil temp sensor is bad or the alarm is bad.
Follow the troubleshooting diagram on page 20-3? 4?
Start from beginning and follow all steps

ohms check the sensor too

oil light should come on when you first turn the key on, then turn right back off after a sec or two.

Can you see the service manual and parts links in my signature block below? Some can some can’t
Click it and see if you can find the 88 TRX300 service manual
I know they are on fleabay some, editions were printed before the end of the model run so you might see for example 88, 88-90, 88-93 and 88-94

Got it!! Thanks!!! I’ll kerp you posted on the progress.
Very good Pat,
Now as your troubleshooting, come back to this thread so we can all track how you’re doing. Shadetree, SamUK, Fishfiles, and others have more Wrenching time on these but there might be an opportunity for me to add to or pick up from your progress.

yeah Shadetree says let’s go back to the beginning. Let’s make sure you have a frame matching engine and carb. We used to have a stickie that made this easy.
You say you have an 88 or 98 TRX300FW? Go to page 1.3 of manual
What are first 11 digits of frame number?
What are first 8 digit of your engine serial
What is the model number on the fuel inlet side of the carb (VE 90A?)

Thought I had it figured out. While testing the oil alert wiring I had a reading on the br/r wire that told me it was short circuit. I had continuity across the Grey and br/r running to the indicator lights. Took the plug apart and cleaned good. Reassembled, got rid of the false reading. Put back together and no dice.

Frame number is JHSTE1505JK012764
Engine is TE15E-8012810
Carb is VE90A followed by an A in a box B17. Just got home from work I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for all the help. Pat
Ok checks out matching frame, engine and carb.
Can you post pics of the alarm and CDI?

Ok page 20-3 of service manual starts some ignition troubleshooting flowchart.
When you switch on, you get a steady neutral light (when in neutral) and the oil light comes on momentarily and then goes out?
So if yes, then you’re asked to check for resistance through the oil sensor. And then continuity and then power through the oil sensor/ alarm wires
