TRX300 Starting Issues

Hi,

A friend has a Honda TRX300 that he's having troubles starting now. When he turns the key to on he hears a click, but no lights (on the dash) come on etc. He pushes the start button and nothing happens. The battery seems fine because at this point it has 11.9 volts and he can operate the winch fine. He is able to start it by kick starting it. When it starts by kick-starting it, the lights on the dash come on (neutral etc).

Any thoughts on why it doesn't start normally?
