I picked up a 98 trx 90 for free. its got no spark. anyone have the troubleshooting diagrams or any assistance. want to figure out which part is bad wether its the coil, pickup, computer, or whatnot. i searched and only found a thread on the 90 where the kill switch was the issue.

if the key switch is a two wire switch unplug it and plg the harness into themselves that bypasses the key the hit the start button eliminate the little things first. but make sure there are no bad places in the wiring causing it to ground out on the frame.

i bypassed the key and the on/off switch. hooking a test light up, i get current from the black/red wire causing the test light to blink:confused:, but nothing on the green/red wire when i pull on the pull starter.. and nothing going to the coil.

the greens are grounds the black/red leads to the alternator I have a really dumb question.... Is the start switch on the red slide button on the left side of the handelbars.

this is coming from my 250X manual but I think the wires are basically the same.

Hmmm this is difficult without haveing the quad infront of me.. ok let's see... you bypassed the switch and the key-switch both at the same time I presume? If so then I going to guess that you possibly have a bad CDI unit how many spade terminals are on your coil? if it has 2 you can take the coil wire off the spark plug take the pos. lead of the coil and ground it to the frame with a piece of wire and some aligator clips once you do the take the coil wire and whatever you need to do to expose the metal where the spark plug hooks into tap it on the frame you should get a spark if not your coil is bad. if it does spark then I would say CDI or Stator. oh make sure you have current running to the coil before doing this... CRAP your PULL start you can't.this may not work then. I've done this on older style coils on cars and boats I've never tried it on a motorcycle or quad though.. so your on your own on that test... if you get a multi meter set it to ohms take a reading across the coil terminals disconnect it first!. the reading will be somewhere in the 0.1 to 0.2 ohms now measure the ohms between the plug wire end (parkplug side) and coil - (green wire) or the ground (-) terminal you should read somewhere around 8.8 to 14 ohms

well the ohms across the two coil terminals was .1 and the plug wire to the green terminal whas 2.3k ohms....

the plug wire is shot on this thing and i noticed its apparently part of the coil so i guess im going to def. need a coil.

now to try and test the cdi box and stator.

with the stator, i get current through the black and red wire when pulling the starter. so does that mean the stator is good?

Yes I would think so. but if your only getting 2.3k ohms i'd say the coil is bad. but to test the CDI on your quad i wcan tell you what my specs are but you donot have a headlight do you? I need to know how many wires and what colors I may can figure out the rest

That would be great! pics of the CDI connector and wires to the components would help me determine the color sequence Honda used on the 90s.

If his is the same as my sons it wont have lights. I can get you a pic of the wires later if that will help and other parts.
