My '05 Foreman has developed a sudden, intermittent shimmy to the left. I drive straight and steady and all of a sudden, the steering jerks to the left. Sometimes once and stops for several minutes and sometimes it will repeat itself every couple of seconds and then stop completely for a bit.

I had it in 4X4, trying to negotiate a tight left turn over an old snow bank on one side and muddy grass on the other side.

The issue reared its head after I put it back in 2X4. I am wondering of one side (left?) is still engaged in the front diff? The display indicates it is out of 4X4.

Any suggestions?

nah, when its in 2wd, you don't get anything pulling on the front, only in 4wd. have a look at your tie rods, tie rod ends, upper and lower ball joints, one or all of these may be worn out ?. also check your wheel bearings.
