Hi Guys!

Not sure which forum catogerie to list this under but anyway....

I have a Bigred trx 300 1989, it has or will have a new 12a/hr battery on it, I want to be able to run a laptop and a couple of of things charging like a satnav and phone whilst on the move (actually just those 3 items) can I use an 240 volt inverter on these batteries? like a 150 watt one? , it doesnt matter if need to keep the bike running as thats no problem for me, but I just want to be sure that the battery and loom etc will be ok?.

I don't really know the answer to your question, but it's interesting to note that the UK models are called Big Red TRX 300 and the US models are called TRX 300 Fourtrax. I'm pretty sure both are the same ATV, though.

I would say yo can but don't run any headlights or anything else when using it and the engine will have to be running.

Yeah presume engine will need to be ran, and yeah we have Bigreds here and just a few that are called Fourtrax, actually trying to find new 'Bigred, stickers but cant!

I wonder if the BIG RED decals that are made for the threewheeler will work? If so you can still get them.

Ahh, thats a point, although I think the tank shape is a little different isnt it?
Bikebandit as good as it is only shows Foutrack stuff!

150w at 12 volts is about 12 amps, so keep the bike running and it shouldn't be a problem.

If it is a little different you could use a hair dryer to shape it to the tank. We do it all the time when we replace decals on water towers its just bigger.

According to my repair manual, the Fourtrax 300 only rated for 5 amps at 5,000 RPMs.

Very true but what he will be charging will only be in mAh so it should be ok.

He wouldn't be able to use the full capacity of the 150 watt power inverter, though, because it would draw about 12 amps, like Pain said. He would need to figure up the wattage of whatever he wants to use and then convert to amps to figure out if it will work or not.

He might be able to use it anyway, and just put a charger on his battery at night to charge it back up. That would work as long as he didn't use so many amps that it would run the battery down while he was still using the power inverter. Also, it might shorten his battery life a little bit.

Yep it could very well shorten his batt. life if it takes awhile to charge the stuff he wants but if it charges at a reasonable rate and he rides or runs the engine for a while after charging it might be ok. I guess it's one of those things he will just have to try and see how well it works.

Yeah, if I really wanted to use that power inverter, I would go ahead and try it anyway. Like you said, if he isn't going to be running too many amps on it, it'll probably be OK anyway.

The charging system on those 300s didn't put out too many amps, but most of the newer ATVs charge more. I guess more and more people are riding everyday and they are using more and more accessories, so they had to start building them with bigger charging systems.

lol maybe I need to get a new quad I would like a wide screen tv on mine!:D

Yeah, I wouldn't use it with all 150w, at least not for very long. For a couple phone chargers it won't be an issue. For a laptop a typical power supply is about 90w, give or take, but even that is a little ambiguous and would probably draw much less to charge.
