i have a 1999 trx400ex that will not start. when i press the start button all i hear is the starter spining so i know everything down to the starter works so im thinking i could need either a new one way bearing or possibly the gear holding the one way bearing that bolts to the flywheel. ive heard if i replace the bearing then i need to also replace the gear but ive also heard that if i replace the gear i need to replace the flywheel......if this is my problem do i need to replace all three parts or will i be fine only replacing the bearing or gear?? im not really sure what to do and dont even know if this is my actual problem so if anyone knows about this and can help please let me know because i downt really want to pay the expensive labor and diagnostic fees at my local shop.

Yep, your one-way starter bearing is bad. Honda calls it a starter clutch, but it's actually just a one-way bearing. The only way that you would need to replace the big starter gear is if the hub that fits inside the one-way bearing is worn. If you replace the bearing and it still doesn't turn the engine over when trying to start it, then you will need the gear.
