A buddy of mine has a 02 rancher es,it does not down shift sometimes with the electronic but can manually shift it on the lever on side. What would be the cause of this.It seems as though when using the electronic push button it is not moving the shifter far enough to change gear.

I had one do that and it seemed to not throw far enough and I adjusted the clutch and it solved the problem
Yep, the first step is to always adjust the clutch free play and make sure you have a good battery and it is fully charged and then go from there. If you can shift through all the gears with the manual shifter, then it's a problem with the electric shift components. If you can't shift through the gears with the manual shifter, then it's a mechanical problem with the shift linkage or the transmission itself. Unfortunately, the '00-'02 models don't store trouble codes like the '03-'06 does and you have to check each component of the ES system with a meter to find the problem. I would get a service manual and start checking each component, starting with the angle sensor.
