My Daughter took my 07 Rincon out and tried to pull someone out of a Mud hole while She was in Reverse, She said it made a noise while pulling. Now when I put it in Reverse it will not move and I hear a soft grinding noise. It also has a slight noise when it is in forward, I think the forward Gears are fine except the slight noise it makes while in forward.

Question 1, what might be wrong?

I have lots of good Tools, a Lift and a Maint Manual. But no special Honda Tools or Pullers.

Question 2, should I attempt to fix it myself or should I haul it to a Dealer?

noise is comming from where..front ?..or back end ?..for question 1..how mechanicly inclined are you ?..question 2..how much money you got depends on if you fix it yourself..or take it to a dealer !..and to answer your op question..more than likely you stripped out either your front or rear differental gears.

It is definately in the Transmission, I am thinking the reverse idler Gear. I have looked over the Manual and it looks pretty complicated in the Sub Transmission. I would say at this time , it should probably go to the Dealer and my Daughter will have a good sized Bill to pay.

I forgot to explain it goes forward fine except for a small noise coming out of the Tranny when its moving forward.

Yikes thats not good sounds like she jard it hard when trying to pull and it snapped. I would not drive it anymore push that sucker. all that metal now floating around the system. worse case is if U run it and a chunk grabs another gear U can crack a case .

Its fixed and back. The outside Reverse Idler Gear Shaft that is a 2 piece Part froze on the inner Shaft. The outside Shaft/Gear froze on the inner Shaft that runs between the Crankcase and the rear Crankcase Cover. They replaced both Reverse Idler Shafts and a Crankcase half that was spun out of shape when the inner Shaft started spinning in the Case.

If I had fixed it instead of a Dealer I would have tried to have a Machine Shop fix the Crankcase. I think they could have rebuilt the socket that was spun out of shape with a little rebuilding or a Bushing. That would have maybe saved 300.00 out of the 1800.00 Bill. Now its fixed right.

I will recommend anyone with a Rincon not do much heavy pulling while in Reverse. This Shaft must have over heated while the Tires were spinning trying to pull out this Truck.

If I would have had Stock Tires on instead of the 25" Mud Light XL(2" wider than stock) Tires I may not have paid a 1800.00 repair Bill. Honda may have a reason for putting those shallow Tread Tires on the new Rincons.

It doesn't really matter which kind of ATV you have, it's not a good idea to pull hard in reverse. Always try to pull forward if you're pulling something heavy.
