I have a 2007 400ex with around 40hrs on it. It has a couple bolt ons hmf slip on amr rev box jet kit. the 250r is a 1986 in awesome shape don't know if its a good trade or not. the 250r is pretty much stock other than a pipe and reeds.

I'm not sure what that R is worth, but I think your 400 would be a better bike.

It's hard for me to compare a 250R to a 400EX because it's a two stroke and because it's an older model. I'm not saying the 250R isn't worth as much as the 400EX, it's just that they are hard to compare, they're two different kinds of machines. It's like comparing apples to oranges for me. I guess it's just whatever you really want.

They are both great quads, your 400ex looks to be a little wider in the front end than the 250r, the 250 looks but i think your 400 looks better. IMO

I do fast trail riding. I love my 400 but I had a 250r back in the 80s and I loved it. but they are not real trail friendly. I know its old but there is like no frame wear on this 250r. and yes my quad is wider it has spacers on it.

just don't know what to do I like the bands on a 2-stroke but I like being able to lug the 4- stroke over the rough stuff. And I just bought my 400 3mo. ago I know its brand new. hard to make up my mind??? and yes I do all my own repairs.

The way I see it is the 250R would make a great second quad, but I ride utilities so my riding habits would be different than yours.

gonna agree with helmut a little,,i think the 250r is a perfect 2nd quad but im not sure i could own it as the 1 and only,,yeah its snappier than the 400 but the 400 is a nice every day quad..
the 400 is fun every where
the 250 is fun showing off on the pavement and in the sand?

If you do trade do you feel like 5yrs later you will be able to find any part you would need for a atv that would be 3 decades old? Can you even get any part needed now? I think the r would make a great second quad.
