timing marks and adjusting valves

Did you by chance install the piston in with the "IN" stamp towards the exhaust valves?correct me if I'm wrong but this is a pushrod engine if the pushrods didn't set into the rockers correctly when you cranked it over theres a good chance you bent an intake valve.

No I doubt it. I think I would look elsewhere like the carb. For the giggles if you put everything on TDC and loosen the rockers by .002 in your case would be .008, it may run. valve adjustment can be a real PITA sometimes.
