Since the last month i have a loud ticking noise on my 94 fourtrax 300. it happens when the engine's hot (maybe 10minute) at low RPM (on pull). nothing at idle and nothing on higher RPM. it sounds like a pinging engine but i always run it with premium gas. I adjusted the valves, timing chain and tensioner are both ok.

Any Idea ?

Have u checked the clutch and the weights, I'm suspecting something inside isnt right or worn. I dont have the service manual download but a moderator should be replying shortly. You said it happens when your on a pull like a hard pull up a hill. That's why I said that.

not necessarily a hard pull. it gonna make it when i'm going up a little hill in second or third gear at low rpm.

Does it smoke at all? Lost any power? Could be piston slap, worn rings.. My betting is that it’s timing chain though. When you say the chain is ok, how did you check it? Have you checked the chain guides for wear?

My mechanic check the tensioner and chain and said it's fine but i hasn't checked it myself.. But .. If it's my chain, why it only ticking when the engine is hot ? No noise at all for the first (about 10 minutes) miles of my ride.

Was your mechanic concerned about the ticking? If he wasn’t overly concerned by it I wouldn’t worry to much, sometimes problems like this are best resolved at a later date as they become easier to identify.
The chain may only ‘tick’ when it’s warm as it will expand a certain amount. There aren’t many other things it can be, centrifugal clutch rattle is usually quite a predominant sound, it’s more of a knock/rattle and you can tell it’s not an engine failure noise, if that makes sense. It could be change clutch springs rattling about as the oil warms up and everything starts to move more freely.

Ditto same thought.

boutin does the 300 have enough power to turn those tracks in 2nd and 3rd gear in moderate snow? seriously pondered buying a set myself but I feel like the 300 doesn't have enough power to turn them, especially with a elk strapped on the back!
