they all suck air in, if they did not ?, they won't run !..lol. now..if they blow air back out of the carb ?, this is a cam chain/timing issue.

if its sucking air, would that not be the intake?

sucking air , makes me think you are suggestion a leak on the intake boot , there is a oring between the boot and the jug and the boot itself could have a hole or split in it , with the engine running you can spray starting fluid around the boot , if there is a leak , the fluid will suck through it and the rpms will increase ------- I am with Shade on timing chain slack . And or low compression being it is 30 years old I would do a compression test first thing
