I found this mod on a other site so I cant take credit for it....
Anyone who has a 300ex knows getting the 300 into reverse is the biggest pain in the a$$. Put it in neautrel, push the button down, pull in the clutch, reach over and pull up the lever.
When you push down the button and pull the clutch in that pulls the reverse selector arm counter clockwise and allows the ex to be able to be put in reverse.
So the mod is.... Remove the cable from the reverse selector arm. Put a small chain in the reverse selector arm. Pull the reverse selector arm counter clockwise and attach the other end of the chain to the frame. Thats the mod!!!
If the reverse selector arm is chained back and you want to put the ex in reverse all that has to be done is.... Put the ex in neautrel and pull up on the reverse lever!!!!

I've been doing the same mod on the Fourtrax 300 utility for years, except I don't take the cable off. I just adjust the cable down by the reverse lever. I adjust the cable until it pulls the lever up all the way and then tighten down the locknuts. Then, you don't have to push the red button down, all you have to do is just push the gear shifter down.

Nice, that whole button thing makes it a pain. I wish I found out about the mod when I had my 300ex.

Its a good mod to do. That reverse on them things suck to use in a need to get the heck out situation.

Iam learning that now!! The 400ex is great. While I loved the 300 you just cant compare the two.

LOL!!! I rarely use mine, except backing out of garage. I usually whip it around, more fun!

on my 400 it goes right in to reverse but dont let it stall in reverse cause then you got to take it back out and then start it

My reverse lever is like the older 300ex it doesn't have that long handle that you pull up so I just go through the button process and take my heal and kick it in rewind then take the bottom of my heal and push it back down I never take my hands off the bars.

With simple mod you can make a 400ex start in reverse...

Just bypass the clutch switch.

Yup. There is a grey wire in there in that system that most people will just cut.
