Greetings,

I have a 02 Rancher 350TE. While replacing the swing-arm pivot bearings, I noticed the threads in the frame, on the right hand side, were damaged when the the bolt worked itself out. I do not have enough threads in the frame to complete the job. Nor does my Tap & Die set does not have the right sizes otherwise I'd "rethread" it. My question is this. Within the frame, it looks like I might be able to remove that whole piece that has the threads. I'm unable to find that part in the service manual.

I'd appreciate any and all advice.

Thank you

That thread is UNF as far as I’m aware, I’m not sure on the exact size though. It would be possible to remove said part and weld a new one in place from another frame, a lot of fiddling around though. You may be a lot better off using a reamer to remove the old threads and tap the next available size thread up. For the new bolt you’d have to get one machines or gonto your local hydraulic suppliers and see if they have any plugs that size and thread.
Whichever way you look at it it’s a pain of a job unfortunately.

Alternatively you could thread a piece of 1/2 or 9/16 plate for a big bolt, grind the threads off the original bearing bolt, place bolt in its seat and weld the plate to the frame, then tension with a new bolt in the threaded plate.
It’s one hell of a bodge but it would work!

if I remember right ?, he never did get it to hold ?. once the threads get stripped out ?, the frame is toast. not saying they can't be '' jerry rigged '' !, but..as I said..its pretty much a done deal when the swing arm bolt threads get stripped out. its posb to cut the bad one out, and re-weld another one back in from another bad frame ?, but..it sure as heck won't be fast and easy !, getting it straight is the hard part, if you don't get it perfectly straight ?..its gonna eat swing arm bearings left and right.

The bolt is actually the pivot the bearing rides on. Just replaced mine as a matter of fact. The right side loads the bearings as well and has a lock nut to hold it in place. It's going to take the correct tap no matter what you do. If the threads can't be saved buy an extra lock nut and grind the tabs off then weld it to the frame. But alignment will need to be perfect.

If you have a lathe, a welder and are competent in the engineering department there are a couple of ways to resolve this issue and still keep it looking tidy.
If you do have the above and are confident in doing it I’ll try my best to explain.

Edit, the simplest way of doing it would be to grind a small amount off the inside of the frame/threaded tube/pivot point, buy a new pivot bolt and locking ring and fit a locking ring either side of the frame.
I’m not sure if the threads of the pivot bolt stick out between the inside of the frame and the swingarm, that could be the only issue.

I used an extra frame I had and swapped the whole bike over to the other frame.

If I were handier with a welder I might have tried welding an extra lock ring to the frame and using that for threads for the bolt, but my welding sucks, and by the time I took enough stuff off to take it to the local welder to get him to do it, I stepped back and looked and decided I was already 1/2 way to pulling everything and might as well just swap to another frame.
