hey all. new here from seattle washington. It looks like this is the place to be for info on honda ATV's. I just picked up an 87 TRX250 and im a bit confused what model it is theres a sticker on the frame that says trx250 and the body seis fourtrax250. I did a google search and found info on trx250R's and trx250x's so what do I have and whats the differants?
Anyways Ive been looking to get an ATV for a long time but all my spare $$ ends up going into my rock crawler prodject. so the other day a freind gives me this Trx250 and seis the engine is siezed up, and that was all he knew about it. so today I sprayed some PB blaster in the spark plug hole let it sit a couple hours and was able to unsieze the moter. so I geuss Ill see where things go from here. the bike needs a new throtle cable, new battery, spark plug and fresh fluids, and well I still havnt tried to fire up the engine but other that that its real nice and looks well taken care of. I dont really know anything about ATV's and thought this would be a great place to learn. hopfully I can make somthing of this broke down beast hahaha. thats my story.

Welcome to the forums. Is it a utility ATV with cargo racks or is it a sport quad? If it's a sport quad, it could be the 250X or the 250R. The 250X is a 4-stroke and the 250R is a 2-stroke.

Yep, it's a 4-stroke. The Fourtrax 250. TRX is short for Fourtrax. The Fourtrax 250 utility was sold from '85-'87 in the US.

ok iv got another question. what other atv's have the same engine as my trx250? i was told the honda big red has the same engine? im thinking it would be cheaper to buy another atv and pull the engine rather than rebuild mine but i dont know what atv's have the engine i need. theres an 85 honda 250xs atc on the local CL but i dont know what engine it has?

the honda big red had the same engine as the trx250's...as for rebuilding your motor...you won't know how much it will cost you..until you do a complete top end tear down...as for your motor being seized..do not spray alot of oil down into the spark plug hole to oil the piston rings..for a fresh rebuilt engine..this is fine..but for a engine that has been sitting for along time..not good at all !!!..more than likely..your cylinder has rust in it..and if this is the case..all your doing is ruining your cylinder walls when you move your piston..you need to do a tear down..see what kinda damage you have so far.

the engine is no longer seized.as for not spraying to much oil into the cylinder to late. i sprayed pb rust buster in there to free things up  . the moter runs it just wont idle with the choke off and its kinda noisy and smokey (brown smoke) and the oil light comes on when i rev the moter. i really have no idea how to go about a rebuild or even having it rebuilt by a shop. my goal is to have a good running moter for no more than $300

300 will over haul it..easy..thats if you didn't ruin your cylinder like i stated ?..lol..pull the top end off..rocker box..cylinder..inspect your cylinder..most honda dealers will mic it for you..tell you weather you need stock rings..or bore it out by looking at it..mine does this for free..as for the piston rings..they aren't exspensive..about 35 or 40 bucks..you need a carb over haul..they are about 25 or 30 bucks..if your timming chain is shot..about 90 from the dealer..main thing right now is..tear it down..inspect the top end..see what all is good..and what all is bad..the noise you here is either your rockers need adjusting..or streched timming chain..as for not knowing how to rebuild it..were here to guide you from start to finish..only thing we can't do..is turn the bolts and nutts for you !..lol.
