Looking on my four wheeler last night to find the year of it, I discovered a screw with grease like substance on and around it. It reminds me of sap from a tree. Does anyone know what this may be and if I should be alarmed?

PS: It's on the cylinder. At least I'm pretty sure. And it's a Honda Recon 250 2004 model

I would clean that section off real good and get another picture. It looks like where a compression release value might have been??? I'm sure someone here will know for sure..

There's a screw in it. The picture didn't take well but the screw that is to left is same as one there. I'm not familiar with the whole cylinder and compression valve release. Maybe you can elaborate for me?

I do not know if a 2004 has a "rope start" or "kick start" or compression release, but that was common on my Honda ATVs as a kid. Basically when you lift the lever, you alter the level of compression, so you can pull start it reasonably easy, see this link Dan's Motorcycle Four Stroke Compression Releases

Given the location, I would think it is either where a compression relief could be installed or a place to rotate the cam, but it's still difficult to determine from the picture. Someone here can point you to a service manual and you can browse through there and find it based on model, year, etc.

Hi: That is the Rocker arm shaft. The O-ring is bad -- you can just get a small tube of high heat silicone caulking -- clean up with brake cleaner -- then apply the silicone until someday you take it apart and replce the O-ring.

How urgent is it to seal it? Are you saying I should put the silicone around the screw as temporary fix and someday take apart the cylinder head and put new ORing in?
It could last for years with the silicone on it.

But what will it do if I don't put the silicone on it? Just more money to spend and time. I'm ready to ride it. Also will that make it where the valve won't decompress anymore? Since it'll be sealed?

Hi: It will leak oil out from there and it may leak more in time.

Okay so basically it's okay that compression won't come out of there? I don't want to do anything rash and make a mistake.
That has nothing to do with compression.
