Another wheel question:

What are the weights of the stock Rancher wheels and tires?

Did a search and turned up nothing. I understand the whole larger tire = less power due to weight, but I wonder if an aluminum 12" wheel and a 25" tire may actually be lighter than a stock 24" tire and steel wheel on my 09 Rancher?

I've found the ITP SS108's to weigh 11.8 pounds and the tires vary by brand with the Zilla's being a hint lighter than the Mud Lite's. I can't find anything on the stockers though.

I can throw one on the scale after work, it will be wheel and tire though...they are not separated.

my neighbor is running 27'' mud lites on his bone stock 420 rancher and it has plenty of power. I do not think you will notice a bit of difference between the stockers and 25's

but if I had a 420, I would be running at least 26'' tires...

don't know much about wheel weights..but..i just wanted to add my two cents worth in about everyone wanting large tires. some of you may..or may not know this..but..as you go to a bigger rim and tire..your increasing your demand on the motor/tranny gears..mainly the rear and front differental gears...ring and pinion to speak of...and the rear axles..i know. i know..we all want to get down and dirty in some pretty deep stuff when it comes to these tires on 4-wheelers..i myself don't think much about being knee deep in a swamp..lol....but..as you have already learned..OR GOING TO ..bigger tires with bigger luggs want more traction..and bigger traction requires more grip..well..the problem here is..the ring gears..pinion gears that they put in these atv's can not handle the stress these tires require. i've seen and rebuilt soooo many atv's..mainly old 300's..thier atv's as far as the whole bike was in decent shape..but damn near every one had the rear end differentals stripped out..because some numb nutt thought it would be a great idea to throw some super swampers with 2 in lugs on it !..lol..soooo..bottom line here is..if you insist on having some large tires with large lugs on it....your going to be having a differental stripped out sooner or later..keep this in mind when you want to look like big foot going down that trail.

Exactly! Also keep in mind that the machine in question is an IRS machine which means that it has CV axles on front and rear...these will also be subject to breakage. I believe there are a couple threads on this site about bikes with oversized tires having shelled rear ends.

OP: Stick to your original plan and get the 25's. Weight will not be a problem, there will be no decrease in performance or handling. If I have nothing better to do tonight, I will pull a rear ITP and compare its weight to an OEM rear.

Green, that would be awesome. Although I think I can get the aftermarket ITP/Zilla weight from the internet so don't kill your evening taking wheels off.

Just toss the stock front and rear on a scale quick and that's prolly good enough. But, if your feeling frisky and want to weigh both, that's awesome as well!

Pretty sure I won't go more than 25" tires. As per Shade's comments it makes sense what is said. I think though that the lighter tires in the 25" size along with the 12" rims will offer very little extra stress. The lugs are only the .75". Plus Green's machine just looks too good! :D

Thanks Guys! Good input.

your welcome..i would not have said..what i said..if i didn't see so many rear and front ring gears and pinions being stripped out..3/4 lugs will be good enough for you steve..thats what i run on my itp mudlites..good enough traction..and easy on hard roads.

your are very correct on the cv joints !!!..they can't take the stress from large tires with hudge lugs..well said bro !

Well, thanks to Green checking for me, I now have the stock wheel and tire weight for the rear of the Rancher. 25.2 lbs. Add a little back in to offset the ware on the tires and we can call it 26 lbs.

The ITP SS108 wheels weigh 11.8 lbs and the Maxxis Zilla's in a 25x10x12 weigh 18.3 for a total of approximately 30 lbs. So a gain of only 4 lbs on the rear and likely even less up front.

So I think this will be the set-up I will try. I don't have the cash for the radials, but possibly next time around I'll try those.
