Hey can anyone tell me what the stock front sprocket size is for a 00' 400ex? I think the one on mine is aftermarket or has been replaced since the bolts holding it in look newer. And whats the stock chain size? Mines got too much slack and its been adjusted all the way. Thinking about dropping down a tooth size in the front to get a lil more bottom end pep but not too sure.

the front sprocket as for stock is 15t..the rear is 38t..the chain stock number i found is 40540-kfb-003..they also had 06405-kfb-p00 with that chain number..must be for a o-ring chain i guess ?..use the first number when you call a dealer or after market place..i'm sure they can cross it over to the right number.

Ok cool thanks for the info. One last question. Ive got maybe 3-4" of play in the chain instead of the recommended 1.5 or so and Ive got the carrier turned all the way back so its as tight as it can go. Is it possible I could move it back forward to give it the most slack and take a link out? Or is there pretty much never a time when taking a link out is an option?

take a hand 4 inch grinder..grind off the links on one or two links..then punch out the links..just do one link at a time..if you do too many..your chain will be too short then.

i just did mine..with some help from the guys around here...and i took it off and spun the carrier all the way to the loosest position. Then i took the master out and had someone sit on the bike to give it the preload, then laid the chain on the sprockets and used the rear sprocket as my work space. Then ya wanna lay the cain over itself to give you an idea of how many links to cut.BUT like shadetree said...BE CAREFUL. no going back!! THE PRELOAD IS IMPORTANT.. when you sit on the bike and push down on the shocks the chain gets tighter..hence the 1.5 inch free play. Its easy man..just take your time and think before you cut.Also..i dropped to the 14 tooth and it was a huge difference.

Well..i do alot of trail riding so i rarely see top of 5th..but i did check my top speed on my gps the other day and it was like 64-65..so not much. It gave me that extra punch/responce outta the pocket i was lookin for. My brother even commented after a day ride that i was sure nuff gittin it comin outta the burms..it`ll pop the front end in 3rd. i`m very pleased for 20 bucks!!! (and i always got the 15 if i wanna git it)
