I'm looking at buying a used stock exhaust for my 400ex so I can work on it in my back yard without pissing off the neighbors (the racing exhaust is just too loud since I live in a urbanized area). I have a 2001 model, and I've been looking around at others. I found an exhaust from a 2004 model for relatively cheap. My question is, are those pipes similar(or the exact same) enough for me to put on my 2001? Thanks in advance.

I think they are the same, I know i 2005 they made some changes... Someone else will chime in.

Yes. Here is how you can find out in the future. Go to bike bandit and find the parts and compare part #'s. Same part# = same part.

One thing to keep in mind. Your carb is prob. jetted for the aftermarket exhaust. So it might run like crap with the stock exhaust.

Yeah, I've thought about that. But I have to put a new battery on and a couple other small things. So I think I should be good even if it does run a little rough. Once I get it running period, we can go from there. Thanks again for the help.

Worse case you run rich and have to replace spark plugs often

I have a 07 400ex. I bought an aftermarket exhaust and gave my stock one to my uncle because his rusted through. He has a 2000 400ex and it mounted right up.

yep I have 07 400ex and I bought a hmf slip on off of a 2000 400ex bolted right up.
