I have a 2004 Rancher ES. When I try to start it I get one click. Battery is new. If I pull the starter cord and push the start button , the starter kicks in and starts the engine. Does anyone know what my problem is. I was thinking about pulling the starter and looking at the brushes. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forums. You might be on the right track. Try tapping on the starter with a hammer, while pushing the start button and see if it starts. It sounds like your starter is bad. You can buy rebuild kits and replace the brushes.

It would be a lot cheaper to rebuild it. As long as the armature isn't damaged, it only takes a few minutes to put brushes in and it will work fine. New starters are expensive, unless you can find a good used one.

I just checked the price of the starter at my local Honda dealer and they're cheaper than I thought. $120 for the starter, but the brush set is only $18.36, so it would be a lot cheaper to rebuild it. Starter prices have come down, they used to be a lot higher.

yeah, try rebuilding it, it only costs less than $20 bucks, if it dont work, then invest in a new starter

as everyone here said..rebuild your brushes..cheaper..and if it don't work..your only out 20 bucks !.
