Starter problem

My 440ex starter spins the wrong way. If I change the polarity of the Battery and make a positive ground then the bike tries to turn over. But nothing else as far as lights seem to work. Any Ideas to what the problem is or what it would take to fix.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see if he's had the starter off or the hot and ground off of the starter. If he hasn't, then that can't be the problem, unless he just bought it and someone else had them off.
yup..if not..i'm reallyyyyyy lost on this one..their's not much left that could cause it..lol
i have leads hooked up right ground to frame single wire starter on400 ex. talked to a mechanic friend on phone just a little bit ago he said that with a two brush starter if someone hooked up battery back wards before me that it could have switched polarity in starter motor and i need new starter. what do u think

Well, I've never heard of that happening, but that don't mean it can't. It just means I haven't heard of it happening. If you have the wires hooked up right and you know that it is the right starter, then, it would be worth a try, because I am out of ideals.
thanks man worth a try 50 dollar fix on ebay maybe

ok..humor me here for a few min's..i want you to do this....this in fact will tell me you need a new starter..i want you to take some jumper cables..hook them up to your car..or truck..what ever you got a good battery in..hook the pos up to the pos terminal from the truck or car to the starters pos terminal..now..take the neg from the truck or car..and while your watching the starter..touch the neg to the frame ..the foot rest works pretty good..tell me which way the starter turns..does it go clockwise..or counter clock wise ?..and does it go the other way from the bikes battery ?..if it does in fact turn the other way..when you jump it..you bikes battery leads are hooked up wrong..trust me..i know what i'm saying here !..make sure you unhook the bikes battery leads before you do this !!

in all my years of working with atv starters..i've never heard of a starter doing that..now..i'm not saying it can't happen..but..i've never seen it do it..it will either run one way..or the other..or not at all.

I used to build windmills. the motors are the axiel flux type that is the same thing as a starter, just turns slower. so what happens is the permanet magnets cause a d.c. current to flow in one direction in the coils. a magnet has a positive and a neg. side if the magnets are in a weak state and someone has reversed the wires by mistake it can change the polarity iv'e seen it happen many times.
Yeah I've heard of things changing polarity.I actually expierienced it with an amplifier.
You guys are killing me here if it's a double brush system and by chance someone took the brushes out and reinstalled them hooking the wrong brush lead to the wrong brush it will in fact turn backwards I have seen it quite a few times on 24v Scissor lift motors. just my two cents....

Other than that I think you may have a bad muffler bearing...
were learning something trx..leave us alone !.lmfaooooooo
