i don't no much about quad motors yet but i was having starter troubles. the bike runs fine with no problems, but you can hear a loud grinding when trying to start it electrically. looked in it and it's missing 2 teeth on what i would say is the "flywheel" of quad. if someone could explain what the gear is really called, that would be much appreciated. i've been reading a lot about the "reduction gear''? but not for sure. what could cause something like this to happen?

thanks

If it's the big gear on the back of the flywheel, it's called the starter gear. The reduction gear would be the gear between the starter gear and the small gear on the end of the starter, itself.

I'm not really familiar with the 450R, but that's how all other ATVs are set up.

Is it the big on the clutch basket? When you start the motor do you use the throttle? you are not suppose to give any gas when trying to start the 450ER as if it should kick back it will tear up the starter clutch and possibly the gears for the starter. Welcome to the forums.

If the starter gear is on the clutch basket on the 450R, then disregard my post above, because it is a different set up than most ATVs.

It could also be the gear on the starter clutch assembly. How many teeth are on the gear that is messed up?
