I am new to this forum stuff, so please bear with me. I have a 2003 Rancher that needs either a new starter or the brushes cleaned on the old one. I was wondering how hard to clean the brushes were or if it was just easier to replace the entire starter. Thanks for any info.

Usually the brushes don't need to be cleaned, but sometimes the armature does. It's really not that hard to do if you are handy at working on things, but if not, it would probably be best to replace it or have someone rebuild it. Sometimes the brushes can be a little tricky to push back and hold out while you put the armature back in. Some are not that hard, it just depends on the starter. You should be able to buy a rebuild kit, but make sure your armature is good, first, or it won't do you any good. I have not bought one in a few years, but I think they still make them.
