2008 420fe,,,Replaced starter. Hit the button and it sounded like a gut shot panther. Figured the "one way" must be bad. Got the flywheel assembly on the bench, but having a tough time breaking loose the Torx head screws that hold the "outer" to the flywheel. I've broken two "average" type bits using an impact carefully. Will have to get some "impact" rated bits. Any advice/tips appreciated. I think I'm getting too old for this. Physically and mentally. Thanks

Usually they are on with red loctite from the factory. And you will want to put red back on when you put them back on. But red loctite is removed with heat only. Or you risk pulling threads or snapping bolts. MAP gas or propane torch the bolt directly or focus around the sides depending on what access you have. That should release the bond of the loctite. Welcome to the forums!

P.S. on the quad i am very familiar with (400ex) the one way bearing is rarely the actual problem. There is a inner hub with a gear that will wear out and not give the one way bearing anything to grab on. Not sure on your quad because i have never worked on one. But just some food for thought!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've read horror stories about the bolts coming loose. I'm a believer in Loctite.
I was wondering if the heat would have any bad effect on the magnetic properties. I wouldn't think so, but you don't know MY luck :( I ordered 3 items from ebay, and only one was right when I got them. According to what I see in the manual, the one way comes assembled in the "outer". I ordered a Shindy bearing by the application chart, but what I got was for TRX300's and 400's, NOT my 420. Can you replace just the bearing, or have to do the whole "outer",,,P/N 28125-HP5-601, #3 on the schematic. I'm going to return the bearing I got ,and order OEM from B Bandit.
To make matters worse, I'm not convinced the one way is bad. It grabs good an tight when turned by hand, and the surfaces don't look bad. I hope it doesn't turn out to be the starter I replaced a few monts ago, that started this mess.
Sorry to get long winded, but wanted to make clear what the problemS are. Thanks again. Gary

No problem glad to help. But sadly this is the furthest i can assist you. Someone will be along soon to give you more direction. I can ease your mind a bit though. Your hand test means almost nothing. The torque your starter puts out is a million times what you can do by hand. When testing all the ones i have changed by hand they feel perfect. Only way i have been able to get concrete evidence of it being bad is to measure the inner surface "boss" with a dial caliper. The manual has a service limit and if its close you will start not being able to turn over on cold start. Then it will progress from that to not being able to turn over at all in any temp. Hope this helps ease your mind if nothing else.

Is the new starter you put in it an OEM Honda or an aftermarket?

The reason I'm asking is cheap china knockoff starters sometimes rotate backwards when installed. Or are junk right out of the package.

If the one-way clutch wasn't bad before you replaced the starter, then it probably isn't at fault now.

It is a "Genuine Honda" "made in/or packaged in Mexico. It doesn't matter what it says on the box, you never know where anything is made any more.
The old starter quit a few times before going out. I opened it up and the magnets were all ground up, came out in pieces. I was thinking the old starter didn't have enough torque to make the one way slip and squeal. It starts the engine quick, but makes the terrible noise in the process. I guess, if replacing the one way doesn't fix it, then I'll have to look at the starter again. It runs fine on the bench, under no load, but,,,?
